Replacement bearings for EQ6
      #2280315 - 03/25/08 01:55 AM

I've had a few PM's on what bearings are needed and where did I purchase them. The following is list of the bearings that I purchased. I did not replace all the bearings on the DEC axis as it's really not needed due to tracking in the DEC axis is really not an issue. It's the RA we're worried about along with the Worm block bearings.

The worm block bearings were purchased from www.VXB.COM

Kit7513 608-2TS Ceramic Skate Bearing 8x22x7 Teflon Sealed 4 $9.95 $39.80

These are perhaps a bit of overkill but figure they were worth it. I have used ceramic bearings in some of the HP 1/5 scale RC cars I own and have been impressed with the smoothness and durability.

The rest of the bearings were purchased from www.ebatmus.com

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Item # Description Quantity Price Total

32208 J2/Q TAPERED ROLLER BRGS 1 $22.94 RFQ
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps those that were interested.

Omar,

The Atlas is the same mount as the EQ6 so the bearings should work fine.

I have now bookmarked this post so I can order new bearings for my EQ6!

Question - How hard is tearing down an EQ6 and replacing the bearings compared to something like an LXD-75. Ive been trying to find good instructions for tearing the mount down and doing a regrease and bearing replacement but Ive not come across anything that meets my needs.

I just did my LXD-75 and except for a few problem areas it went pretty easy and smooth.

The Atlas is a much more complicated item. The LXD55 is simple in comparision. However, if you take lots of pictures as you disassemble it, you should do well.

I have also bookmarked this thread. Thanks for the info SG. I look forward to updates on your site.

I have yet to assemble all my parts for AP, but being a perfectionist (within my limits) and tinkerer, I see myself giving the Atlas an overhaul, needed or not.

Have you found a better site than Beevo's for these mods?

I know I will probably do the same thing also! Im not all that handy but as long as it is pretty straight forward and doesnt need any strange, rare or exotic tools I should be allright.

I'm hoping to get the mount into work hopefully this weekend. I will be doing a comprehensive step by step with pictures as I go documenting a complete teardown and rebuild. It may take me a few days after that to put it together but it will be done in a week or 2.

Thanks Strgazr for the info.Ill also be checking your photos of the repair that will be very helpful for my lack of mechanic skills.

I agree that the EQ6 is very complicated. I also updated my mount with SKF bearings.
Very nice stuff after all. But be carefull with all small parts.

What did the updated bearing do for you? Was there a marked improvement in PE for imaging work?

I dident do it for Imaging work. But the improvement for visual use was remarkable.Very smooth. All ways better then the chinees bearings

Hey Star, if there's plastic spacer washers used in the setup of the worm gears, I have some skived teflon sheet in a few thicknesses I can spare. Between the teflon spacers instead of plastic, and new tighter tolerance bearings, that mount ought to work sweet.

Is there any benefit to going with the considerably more expensive bearings from SKF (non-Chinese)?

Thanks!

Good info to know. I take it both axis's have the same bearings? 'cause if i'm gonna do it someday, might as well do both.

I just rebuilt mine with the kit from astro-rubylith and I can say it makes a difference for sure.

As far as PEC I started with 18 peak to peak out of the box and by doing the rebuild I got it down to 8 peak to peak.

Ill bet by doing some more fine tuning I can even get more then that , I would say at a bare minimum to replace the worm gear bearings with the ceramic ones and do a relube and fine tune gear mesh.

Oh and it does use the same bearings for both axis , 6 of them plus the 2 race plus 4 for the worm gears.

Do the large bearings that you got from Astro-Rubylith (which are Chinese for sure at that crazy-low price) make a difference in the looseness / smoothness of the axes? I have a very sticky DEC axis which makes balancing impossible.

My guess is, from watching the hypertune dvd multiple times and being in the middle of my own rebuild, that the only thing letting the gear move when you lock the clamp are in fact those bearings, and also the bearing-spacer interface.

The bearings might be fine or just need a regrease, and perhaps the spacers (nylon or other cheap plastic) are damaged. I will be looking to replace my spacers with the teflon ones.

Im sure they are chinese and I might do another rebuild later on to put the more expensive ones it , it was really pretty easy and it definitely made balance easier and the whole thing runs smoother.
