I have a brass mogey telescope, 46" to 50" long and 3 1/2" in diameter. I am a novice. Is there somewhere in Wisconsin I can take it to check it over - - that I can trust? Bill

Just got finished with a repaint on my newly acquired 7TE (1950s'?) . Sanded to bare , finishing with a 3M sanding pad & then steel wool . Wiped clean with 91% isopropyl alcohol & paper towels . Used Rustolium automotive primer in the rattle can . No sanding between primer & top coat . Let primer set up 24hrs. Used Rustolium Epoxy Appliance White , re coating twice with 20 to 25 minutes between coats . The finder scope turned out like a factory finish as I was getting close to actually putting down too much paint . Being afraid of getting a run or sag on the main tube , I didn't get quite enough paint down on the final coat & have a slight orange peel finish , although it still came out really nice . 36 hours was about all I waited before re assembly & the paint was plenty cured for all but the roughest handling . After 48 hours , I rubbed it down with Mothers Gold Class automotive wax which smoothed out the slight orange peel nicely but it remains to be not as factory finish as the finder . Still I am very pleased with the results & if it isn't pointed out , I don't think anyone would know that it isn't a 50 year old scope that just came out of its' box for the first time . I will wax it again from time to time & with that it will just become more & more refined . There is a fine line between getting the paint to flow out & really shine or getting a sag or run . I guess I just opted to play it a little on the safe side . Experience in the art of spraying is what it's all about . All in all , I feel the Rustolium stuff is the way to go & I'm a happy camper !

Dave.....About all I can say is man I sure wish I had a fireplace like you you lucky dog. Oh yeah the telescope nearly forgot. I've always been partial towards crinkle finishes even tho' only my Selsi has it but then again it's not a mid fifties scope. One of these days I'll be fortunate like you and others who get a hold of an old scope. You did a great job. It's quite an undertaking isn't it? Sometimes it may not feel like it because of the labor of love involved.  Mike

Actually Mike , it wasn't in bad shape at all . The tubes really needed a paint job (lots of scratches) & the dec. shaft was frozen solid , but a little silicon spray lube into the right spots & some working it back & forth took care of that . Now it spins nice & smooth all the way around . Luckily there were no dents in the tube , so sanding & re finishing is all there was to it . I had to drill out a messed up screw holding on the finder bracket , but that was no big deal . After the re paint , I replaced all the screws with new ones from Ace Hardware . Just need to take the old ones down to match the threads . I disassembled the wooden legs (I believe they are Ash) , sanded them down & used a can of clear gloss enamel I had laying around the garage & did some trim re finishing with bumper & trim paint also already in the garage . The optics are amazing on this little 60mm . I got great Jupiter detail the other night with a shadow transit & Red Spot transit together . Great cloud banding , & Lunar detail was outstanding . I forget that I'm viewing through a smaller scope . I pushed Luna up to 284x without the image breaking up ! I'm stoked with this thing !
I paid 31 bucks for it on the Bay & with the 35 bucks I have in shipping costs , plus 5 bucks for the Rustolium Appliance paint , I'm at a grand total of 71 bucks ! Not bad IMO .
I can't believe nobody outbid me on this . When I saw it , it was at 30 bucks , so I figured , what the heck , I'll bid 31 ! Three days later , I watched the auction close with my finger on the trigger & to my surprise , it closed at 31 dollars !
It didn't come with a box or any oculars or even a diagonal , but I still feel I got a great deal . The primary is flawless !

I am doing a cleaning and some replacement of fasteners on my 1976 Model 152.I am finding it extremely hard to find the correct size screws for the worm gear and many components .Many phillips heads screws are showing some wear. I want to replace most everything.Has anyone ever tried to get the Original Unitron drawings for fabrication . Anyway any help you could advise me on would be greatly appreciated . RoyM13
