Hello All,
I sent back to PST for rust repair 15th January 2008. I was told 3-4 weeks turnaround time. After many calls I have just been told that the earliest it will be repaired in 5th May and will be back to me June!!!!.
I am kind of annoyed (to say the least). Customer service told me that I am lucky as it could be 10 months for people just sending in now.
I am seriously considering a LUNT
Cheers, Richard

I waited a couple of weeks longer than expected for my BF10 to be "de-rusted" (replaced, actually) by Meade....but not nearly as long as you've been told!
I must give Meade credit for stepping up to the plate and taking care of a rampant problem that pre-dated their acquisition of Coronado. True, the affected scopes were still under warranty, and "buy the company, buy their problems", but I could easily imagine other companies trying to slither out from under such responsibilities...
That said, I'm on the Lunt waiting list myself. I'm betting (hoping, praying) that their eventual products will be well worth waiting for, and I don't have a particularly good feeling about Meade's viability--especially in the niche markets--at this time.
Yeah, it's a crapshoot. Roll the dice, I say!
Sunny skies,
Jim

Sounds a bit rough Richard, I borrow a PST from a friend occasionally, he sent that one back for 'de-rusting' and it was returned within a fortnight. Telescope House were the original suppliers and they handled it for him, no problems.

I guess you all saw the Lunt ad in S & T last month. Taking orders for April delivery. Then someone posted here to the effect that Lunt had altered some specifications and production was going to be delayed. There seemed to be no answer to just exactly what was to be altered. And it did not appear that anyone had contacted Lunt in this regard. Just rumour mongering. I will get my dealer to contact Lunt to get the latest, since I have one on order. I shall let you know what they say. Keith

Richard: I have a repaired PST, but the repair was done for the original owner. I am a bit surprised that you were given a somewhat short turnaround time, as it is my understanding that generally speaking it has taken a minimum of 10 weeks to complete and return the repaired units. No doubt this time will increase as more units are returned. Be assured, though, that the repaired scope will perform beautifully. Keith

Don't be so sure on that. I can cite multiple instances where the repair, did fix the rust, it introduced serious astigmatism in the pentaprism assembly due to misalignment.
If the scope is "repaired" it should perform perfectly i.e have absolutely zero astigmatism in the optics, which we know they can have if the prism is correctly aligned (as in my CaK, Pete Lawrences CaK, and a few others), and have no rust.

I'm aware of the mis-alignment problem. Fortunately it is easily taken care of. Mine was out about 7 degrees!! Keith

I have been in contact weekly with Lunt Solar Systems both here and in private emails. The changes we have been talking about on this forum are to the 60mm Double Pass. They didn't want to offer me a ship date when I ordered mine (there are about 100 ahead of me). The feeling I get from Markus and from Rikki is that shipping will start with the 60mm single pass and the 200mm single pass very soon. There is a buzz of excitement there.
The websites have been lagging behind the information posted here by Markus. I am sure they are very excited for the big trade show on the east coast.
I am very excited to learn more about the full aperture filters and have a request for information in and I will share it when I can.
And of course I am obsessed with the double pass and will share first light when I can!

But easily taken care of invalidates your warranty..

Well, since it's not "time" yet, I guess they're still technically "on time".
However, I'm also a firm believer in Hofstadter's Law:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofstadter's_Law
My guess--and it's only a guess--is that the Lunt team is laboring mightily to have a selection of a few demo products on hand at NEAF, and possibly a trickle of market-ready products soon thereafter.
As I've said before, I have confidence that the Lunt team has the capability of producing a quality product, and I'm in line for one of them.
Not a good time to start holding your breath, though.
Cheers,
Jim

Man! I knew I should have sent mine in long ago.
Should have taken advantage of my cloud conditions.
You know, sending the PST in might result in a long period of clear sky, during which I could get some use out of the 8"Ø at night.
Or would that only guarantee cloudless skies during daylight hours?

Here I get fog at night when the Dob is down but sun in day. That is one of the main reasons I like solar observing.

I sincerely hope that Meade doesn't mind us storing the PST upside down to keep the prism in line. Good heavens, next thing you know they'll be telling me I can't have sugar in my tea!! Keith

I have just received word from my dealer with regard to Lunt shipping and the changes now in place. There are NO STATED SHIPPING DATES YET. It seems they have actually added several different versions to their original lineup, and I will just refer you to their website for the updated information there. I may well have ordered a different scope had I known all these were going to be available!! C'est la vie!! Keith
