Last night after a quick image of classic OC M37 I noticed Megastar reference some obscure OCs nearby including King 8, CZ23 and Basel 4 which I've imaged too but seem to miss the significants of this trio as there are seemingly finer asterisms and wonderful star-chains [as my pics show] in the area - puzzled Stars to about mag 14/15 are recorded

It is thick MW with nebulae and clusters galore in the area. I have picked my way through there a couple times and have not gotten it all.
One reference I use is Messier 45 , it has some charting capability and has a lot of the more obscure open cluster catalogs loaded.

Andrew, et al;
Some time ago Brian Skiff at Lowell Observatory mentioned that most of these "obscure" clusters are from studies done with either a spectroscope, looking for a common spectral type among the stars; or a proper motion study looking for a common birthplace.
My point is that Messers King, Dollinze, Ruperect...et al, were not putting their eye to an eyepiece and saying "ah, there is a nice grouping...let's call that a cluster". They were looking at photographs or spectrographs and making their list of "clusters" from there. Rare indeed are the clusters beyond the NGC that are really fascinating at the eyepiece of a medium size telescope.
It would be interesting to make a list of the best of the clusters beyond the NGC and Messier. I started once and some of mine are on the SAC website, but it could be fun to add on a few more.
Enjoy; Steve Coe

Nice point Steve.
I will add... There are some more recent efforts to sort "real" open clusters from mere groupings, the effort is to find stars that are actually physically related. If you want to know the status of a cluster you can check Archinal and Haynes' book on the subject . There are also a couple good web references like WEBDA.

Thanks Steve for the clarification [especially as my prime interest is spectroscopy] so I shouldn't promote the commonplace I look so I see approach
