Another way is to use http://tinyurl.com
Very easy to use, simply copy your long URL in, and receive a tiny url:
http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2079310/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1
becomes this:
http://tinyurl.com/ynwmey
No sign up AND free to use.

OK...what is a "URL" in street language? Can it be simplified by saying "Text"?

I asked for its translation in PLAIN LANGUAGE, please.
"Weblink"? "Universal Resource Locator"? "Thread"? "Post"? "Paste"? "Cut"? "Drag"?
Why can't you people use plain talk?
I know that an Alpha Particle is a Helium Nucleus, and a Beta Particle is an Electron, and that Plutonium is created when a Uranium 238 Nucleus is bombarded with and captures an extra Neutron, producing PU 239, and that Lithium Deuteride produces Tritium for H-Bomb fuel when heated to fusion temperatures, but your URL "code talk" leaves me gasping!

Hal, we are using plain language in today's vernacular. URL means internet link. You know, you click on it and it takes you to a web page.

HEY DON:
Oh, you mean a "LINK".....I recently learned what that was.
Don...you ain't gonna believe this, but I've owned computers for 12 years, and I've had an on-line account for 10 years, but I swear that I STILL DON'T KNOW the difference between a "Browser", a "Server", a "Search Motor" and an "Internet Provider".
My knowledge is narrow in scope, but HIGHLY FOCUSED in my personal areas of interest.
Thank you, and may you enjoy Uncle Sam's 232nd Birthday!

Call me old fashion but I prefer using the simple UBBcode method.
Code:
So a link to [url=http://www.cloudynights.com]Cloudynights[/url] looks like this.
is:
So a link to Cloudynights looks like this

I have to agree w/ Kal on this matter. In particular, I don't like TinyURL links, because there's no way of knowing where it's actually going to take me until after I'm committed.
Seems like no more effort to put a long URL into UBBcode, than to go to TinyURL and jump through their hoop...

Many paths lead to Rome, whichever you choose is fine- please just refrain from post a huge URL which screws up reading the page for the rest of us.
BTW, I too dislike Tiny, but if that's what works for you, cool.

I'm late posting I know but when one needs to use a url shorting site use http://lnk.nu/
It creates urls that GIVE you an idea where you going ie:
http://lnk.nu/cloudynights.com/10sk (a link I created that take you to this discussion)
By dragging the [lnk.nu] link in their tool section to your browser toolbar, you'll create a button that allows you to make a minilink to any page you're on.

I use Clickodometer.com for shortening urls It also has a click counter, and will even email you when you want to be alerted that someone clicked your link
