Binocular Icon 2 : The Beehive Cluster, M44
      #2307497 - 04/05/08 06:38 PM Attachment (96 downloads)

M44 in Cancer is a typical binocular object. With a total magnitude of 3.1 the Beehive Cluster or Praesepe was known since antiquity. And indeed, at a distance of 520 lightyears, the cluster is faintly visible as a large nebulous patch to the naked eye. With a simple pair of binoculars the patch resolves into a beautiful V-shaped open cluster measuring more than 1° across. Several multiple stars are visible at low power. The binocular view is perfect for such a large object. Most telescopes don't offer a wide enough view to show the cluster in it's 'natural environment'. While studying the object, I got the impression of a deeper darkness behind the cluster, compared to the overal background brightness. Could this be an optical effect created by the contrast between the cluster stars and the background? I don't know if it shows in the sketch. The bright star in the lower left part of the sketch is Delta Cancri. The one in the upper left corner is Gamma Cancri.

Rony,

Wonderful sketch. This binocular view is indeed perfect for this open cluster. Isn't it great the way a new viewing tool allows you to re-discover all the great celestial wonders all over again.

Thank you, Frank.

You are right about 'rediscovering' the celestial wonders. All kind of memories come back when I sketch these 'classics'. But there is more to it. The binocular views has its limitations. That's for sure. But binoculars allow us to see the deep-sky in a whole different perspective. Especially the milky way regions offer amazing vistas in small binoculars. I hope that the summer time will bring many clear nights.

This is a wonderful cluster and is probably best viewed with binoculars, IMHO. You have rendered this cluster brilliantly!!

Rony --

Very nice sketches (this one and Icon 1). You have incredible patience to get all those field stars positioned!

Cheers,
-- Jeff.

Rony, no image or picture I've ever seen comes this close to the actual binocular view I enjoy so much. Thank you for sharing!

Rony,

Thank you for posting the finest observation of the Beehive Cluster (M44) that I have ever seen. You have captured this magnificent open cluster very nicely. It appears to glow in your observation.

Rony,

I absolutely LOVE that rendering! The Praesepe is one of my all-time favorite OC's, as well as one of the very first DSO's that I found when learning to star-hop. I always make time to take in this magnificent cluster when it is in the night sky; and your sketch definitely does this beauty justice!
