      #2318377 - 04/10/08 08:12 PM

posted this in beginners but i am posting here as well.was going to go out and get celstron skymaster 15 x 70 then i noticed that the 20-100 x 70 were 30 bucks more and the 25-125x 80 were 40 bucks more..just wondering if the extra few bucks is worth it.any disadvantages to the zooming binocs?

No small binoculars are made well enough to operate at thos zoom magnifications

zoom binoculars are impossible to adjust if out of alignment.

the incidence of out of alignment in binoculars under a few hundred dollars is very high

field of view and image quality suffers dramatically at high power in a zoom

don't buy the zooms

you might want to set that page to threaded and then re-establish the link so you can read the post titles below.

I agree with Ed.

DON'T buy the zooms. I went through that once. The remaining parts are in the basement waiting for something else to do! Enuf said.

Best regards,
Dave.

Even expensive zooms have narrow FOVs and poor edge sharpness at low mags. I always recommend staying away from zooms.

Barncat ,

Just in case you haven't got the message loud and clear .

Do NOT buy any of those ZOOM binoculars !

If you do , I can guarantee you will regret it :-)

Regards
Kenny

It's not far off topic to welcome Kenny back as he has always provided practical (and often entertaining) ADVICE ON BINOCULARS.

I guess it took something as shocking as someone even thinking about zoom binoculars to bring Kenny back to life.
Brian.
