Reasons for renewed interest
      #2320067 - 04/11/08 04:31 PM

Dear Guys , Gals and Mr.Onions ,

I thought it worth mentioning some of the reasons my passion for looking through , reading about and discussing binoculars seems to have been rejuvenated .

A few months ago , I found myself in the rather depressing state of realising that I seemed to have lost almost all interest in even looking through binoculars , and for a while , couldn't really put my finger on why .

A few weeks ago I started re - reading some of my posts to this forum from almost five years ago , and started to think about why and how my diminished passion had come about , when suddenly , something clicked .

I realised the main turning point in all this was when I started to wear GLASSES .

I have NEVER felt comfortable looking through binoculars when wearing glasses -- and the bold voice of Dave ( DJB )kept nagging away in my brain .

YEARS ago , Dave once wrote " I simply REFUSE to wear glasses when using binoculars " -- and I started thinking to myself " why can't I just be as determined as that ? "

So , three weeks ago , I made the decision that regardless of astigmatism and short - sightedness , I was NOT EVER going to wear glasses again when looking through binoculars -- PERIOD !

I can't begin to describe what a difference this has made to me -- I'd actually FORGOTTEN just what a simple PLEASURE it can be to just hold a binocular to my eyes and let my eye sockets sink into the eyecups -- with no unwanted reflections from the eyeglasses to annoy me , no fear of scratching the glasses against the eyecups , nor of scratching the eyepieces with my glasses , no more obsession with inadequate eye - relief ruining my pleasure , or of losing that all so important outer 10% of the field of view , no more fussing around rolling or twisting eyecups back and forth or in and out , and no more permanent relegation to closet of two otherwise quite enjoyable binoculars to use in the form of Swift Kestrel 10 x 50 and Helios 15 x 70 .

There continued to be two slightly annoying problems with two other of my little armoury -- namely the otherwise truly WONDERFUL Nikon 10 x 42SE , and the perhaps not so wonderful Strathspey 20 x 90 , both of which I have addressed with some success over the past couple of weeks .

With regard to the SEs , fellow member Patric ( Swedepat )will remember only too well that for almost a YEAR now , I'd been awaiting the delivery of some specific neoprene washers which I ordered after accidentally discovering they were a PERFECT fit to place / temporarily glue to the existing inner rings of the eyecups , to rectify the well - known problem of " blackout " due to the capability of placing the eyes too CLOSE to the eyepieces .

Well -- a dozen of those washers finally turned up two weeks ago -- but to my great disappointment , I quickly discovered that the modern versions are slightly SMALLER in outer diameter AND slightly THINNER than their predecessors .

This means that not only NO LONGER will just ONE of these washers adequately " pack - out " the surplus eye - relief -- but in fact TWO are now required to make it physically impossible to get one's eyes close enough to the eyepieces to see the dreaded " blackout " .

Not only that , but due to the slightly reduced outer diameter of the washers , they will now JUST about fall out if the binoculars are held vertical with eyecups facing the ground , if shaken slightly .

I have overcome both problems by the simple application of four narrow strips of black adhesive tape to hold the washers inside the rolled - out eyecups . They may LOOK a bit rough -- but who cares ? -- I can now sink my eyes into the eyecups , see the entire 6 degree TFOV , with a perfect field stop , and no blackouts whatsoever .
This simple action has converted the Nikon 10 x 42 SE into a binocular with an exceptional EASE of view -- more akin to the " E2 experience " ( although admittedly without the wonderful extra wide field of view ! )

As a result , the Nikon 10 x 42 SE has become a " MUST HAVE " glass -- not only for me , but for my wife Kathy , who has abandoned her previously beloved Swarovski 8 x 20B pocket with such vengeance that it is taking me all my time to get the SEs from her grasp now , especially at weekends at our newly located weekend retreat , sandwiched so delighfully between two National Parks , the English Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales .

I have also managed to come across an alternative set of lightweight aperture masks cum objective lens caps for occasional use with the 20 x 90 . I have taken the extreme measure of fitting 50mm masks , which I can happily report seem to be having the effect of completely eliminating all the visual CA , and internal reflections , with the added bonus of providing a greater depth of FOCUS , the reason for which is explained in a very interesting article I came across on the internet , which I may post a link to if anyone is remotely interested .

Finally , I cannot pretend to have reconsidered my position here at Cloudy Nights without mentioning the fact that NOT to have done so , I would have considered a most SELFISH act of defiance , bearing in mind that many folks I can only consider to be TRUE friends , have repeatedly asked me to start posting again .

Well , it is SPRING after all -- my favourite time of the year -- and I hope that everyone here can and will share my will to let byegones be byegones .

As I was reminded by the passing of a dear former family member only a week ago , life really is too short for anything other than love and sharing .

At least , I'm prepared to give it another go , folks , with apologies to anyone I may have offended or upset along these sometimes rocky roads .

Thanks for reading .

Kind regards ,
Kenny

Welcome back Kenny. I really missed you on CN.:-) Even with me sending you mail at your home email.:-)In Which it helped me a lot.

I must say that I agree with you a lot about not wearing glasses while using binoculars. I do not like to wear glasses while using binoculars as well as other optics. The glare and loss of ease of view while wearing glasses puts me off. I have tried it and always go back to naked eye viewing.

Sorry to hear of your loss of a former family member.

That would not work for me - nothing would ever be in focus with my severe astigmatism.

Welcome back Kenny, that's the main thing! I can sort of relate to everything you said.

Have you heard about the Televue Dioptrix astigmatism correctors? I've never seen one so don't know how big they are, but I bet you could get the glass out of one and fix it up against the eye lens of a big-lensed bino using tape technology, if your astigmatism really bothers you. I've also seen similar custom ocular add-ons advertised by at least one independent optician. With a center focusing bino, the orientation wouldn't change, and if you had a bit of eye relief to spare, you'd be set. I'm nearsighted about 20/50, .25D cylindrical in one eye, but never wear my glasses to observe (except sunglasses when it's really bright here in sunny New Mexico), not only because of the luxurious up closeness but also because going from slightly blurred 1x to razor sharp severalx is a big thrill.

Lest you develop an inferiority complex about your economy 20x90, let me tell you that my Fujinon 16x70 also benefits hugely from a 50mm stop in the daytime. The notorious lateral CA is practically eliminated, and color saturation, contrast, and sharpness come really close to what I'd call a good view. At night too, stars look telescope-tight and doubles are easy to split the with stops, which I simply remove when it's time to "go deep". Almost like having two binoculars! I wish it was perfect, but I am happy to have found an easy way to cope. The bigger, more powerful, and faster the achromat, the worse optical common sense is violated.

Finally, my wife, too, has discovered what great optics look like, and has abandoned her Celestron and taken over my prized Fujinon 7x50, and to make matters worse complains constantly about the weight and IF. The ransom, unfortunately, is a 8.5x42 Swarovski, which I am getting at a fair price off Astromart, and should be here any day. Hey, we were hippies you know, I never bought her a diamond, too conventional.
Ron

Hi Kenny,

It's a pleasure to address you in this forum again, welcome back.

It seems that you have rediscovered that looking through (almost) any binocular is better than not looking through any binoculars. Seems like a simple joy, and a touch of magic, to me.

Thanks all for your warmly welcoming comments .

Ron ,

Yes , of course I am familiar with the TeleVue dioptrix concept , and a very good idea it is , too .

A couple of years ago I had the privilege of trying out a whole range of anti - astigmatism lenses , which was what made me realise that OVER correction ( also achievable by wearing TWO pairs of prescription glasses , one behind the other ) can sharpen the image to an extent almost unimaginable .

One point which puts me off the idea of using Dioptrix is one that ties in a bit with another aspect of observing I touched upon in my post above , which is how much more enjoyable a session can be when two or more people are sharing the wonderful experiences of looking at distant scenery and action through binoculars .

I must remind readers again that 90% of the use binoculars get put to by members of this household and other relatives is of a daytime terrestrial nature , perhaps each having lower magnification pairs around the neck ( 7x and 8x ) with another 10x pair or two ready for grabbing and perhaps a 20x pair mounted alongside for closer views .

It's bad enough having to adjust right diopters and IPDs each time swapping and changing takes place , without having to consider removing and replacing Dioptrix lenses .

It's like the old alternative of fixing binoculars so they are aligned only for a specific user's IPD -- not much fun for other family members or friends , who tend to have different IPD settings , and especially from my own favoured IPD setting of 68mm .

Happily for my wife , the 20 x 90s are aligned for an IPD only slightly wider than her own -- and I've got used to looking through them with the IPD set too narrow for my eyes -- even that is preferable to the eyestrain caused by the misalignment .

On a related topic , another thing I've noticed about having the 90mm. masked down to 50mm. is that using CESDewar's ingenious method of checking alignment with a deliberately out of focus side superimposed over a focused side , the extra sharpness of the FOCUSED side helps to see just to what extent the two sides ARE misaligned , hence making it easier to adjust the IPD to the optimum position for conditional alignment .

Joe , congratulations on your latest acquisition of a Zeiss 7 x 42 -- now are they BRIGHT or what ? !! :-)

I must say , I'm a little surprised by you getting one of those -- I thought you were a dedicated Canon / Pentax fan .

It would be interesting to hear about your impressions of the Zeiss !

Kind regards
Kenny

Welcome back Kenny. My binocular career owes so much to your suggestions and encouragement--and I am sure so many people can say as much and more about your valuable contributions.

I never fail to look through an eye cup without thinking of you and reciting a phrase from one of your valuable posts. [By the way, I am now up to seven pairs of binoculars and a spotting scope.]
