Flip mirror new
      #2306741 - 04/05/08 11:54 AM

I'm thinking of adding a 9.25 SCT to my Atlas and wondering if a flip mirror might be an alternative to a small monitor. I had never thought of this until I saw a few such systems in some old CN posts.

You mean using the other port to look at the object with an eyepiece then flipping the mirror up so the camera can go to a remote monitor?? If that is what you mean, there are issues with flip mirrors because many have too much light path length. If you get one that works, you still have to rig the EP so that it is parfocal with the camera to avoid refocusing back and forth.

Usually a flip mirror is just used to help see the object at a chosen magnification without having to touch the mounted camera. The monitor or monitors that are used remain unaffected.

It was mostly for locating objects and not focusing. I don't what to use a laptop, too much light for star parties and hard to use with an EQ mount. I guess I might have to install a 4" LCD next to the focuser.

I really enjoy your sketches, amazing detail and one of the reasons I ordered a MCHP. I have a 12"LB, but don't know how I'm going to locate small DSO's without a GoTo system. I'm looking at using an old Comet Catcher or ordering a 9.25 SCT, both for use on my Atlas.

My experience with flip mirrors (Vixen 1.25" and a while with Rusty's VanSlyke 2") tells me that you cannot use them at all with fast newts/dobs... there is nowhere near enough back/in focus...

Best case for them is with SCTs which have tons of back/in focus... next best is refractors... they do make finding things so much easier...

you can easily parfocalize the eps while using them; either with lifting the EP up and then tightening, or with parfocalizing rings...

I love the use case of flips; just wish I could find one that took 2" EPs w/o taking up so much more back/in focus versus the 1.25" ones!

I bought the Meade flip mirror system here. It works great on my LX200GPS. It has a helical focuser for the EP. It's much easier to locate objects on the Mallincam with it.
