Folks,
You might know already but the SPC900NC is now a discontinued webcam.
So if you haven't bought one yet...do so now!!! I managed to buy two today...phew!!!
I have noticed that not many are left and most online U.S. sites are now "out of stock".
Thought I would let you all know

Celestron Skymaster 15x70's MC - Field of view has a Smoky/Brown tint making them less bright during daytime viewing BUT this doesn't seem to affect night time viewing...Testing against the Strath's continues!!!
Oberwerk Lightweight 20x80mm FMC - Arrived - Had to collimate them. Undergoing tests.

I think they are still plenty around though. I was at Sams club a week or so ago and they had a bunch in stock, the package had a different model number (I believe it was listed as a SPC890NC) but it is the same camera. I think the difference in model number has to do with the packaging.

Be careful with that though as Philips made a number of camera using the SPC900NC external design but the sensors are different (CMOS instead of CCD).
It will be interesting to see if they come out with a better webcam for imaging.

Product info for the SPC890NC on the Philips website lists it as a CCD camera with <1 lux min illuminance so it should be the same camera.

Then it should be fine. The camera I saw in Walmart that used the same casing (but all white) used a CMOS chip. I don't remember it's product number though.

As far as I know they are pushing the SPC1300NC Webcam as the new flagship cam.
Unfortunatly it uses CMOS!!
Yes, be sure to check the full SPC900NC M/N number before you buy to ensure you have the CCD cam...SPC 900NC/00

But what about this SPC 900NC/27?????????????
It looks like all versions of the 900NC being SPC900NC/00, 27 & 37 are no longer being made.
Incidently, now that you ask this Wmacky, does anyone know what the difference is between these versions?
When you look at the philips website and compare each model numbers technical specifications, there is no obvious difference....they all use CCD. See links PDF format below...
SPC900NC/00
SPC900NC/27
SPC900NC/37
I think the later versions 27 & 37 models, where made to be more compatible with MSN, Skype & Vista and so on but not sure. I think the updated drivers from the Philips site will bring the earlier cam up to date as I understand.
Can anyone say for sure?

How do you know it is being discontinued? It is still on their U.S. website.

It is no longer on the U.K. Philips website and all information about it has been removed... SEE HERE
Only 3rd party vendors are selling whats left apparently and already some suppliers are "out of stock". I noticed the same on some U.S. vendor sites too!! Look at amazon.com, it says ships 1 to 3 weeks....a sign they might be importing from surplus stock elsewhere.
I have also learned from a reliable webcam reviewer in the U.S. that the product has been discontinued as of February. It might be Philips U.S. have some left in stock and have not yet removed it as a consumer product from there website like they have done here in the United Kingdom.
This is why I am warning everyone just in case

I guess this narrowed down my guider selection.. I couldn't find one at any of my local stores either. They were on the shelves 2 weeks ago too.. I was hoping to go and pick one up finally this weekend, but that went out the window. I think I'll try the Orion autoguider with the ST4 port on it. I figure with a GPUSB and an SPC900NC and the nose piece, it will cost just almost as much anyway..

I called Philips today about the model numbers and was told it was market based...thats it...no difference in the models...just a way for them to track sales...I was also told off the record about a new webcam that should be out "soon" thats going to blow away all others...she wouldn't give any details but the lab does have a full working version of it for testing..."cmos" or "ccd" I don't know...but interesting none the less...
also...

Excellent info tiggere.
I wonder if the new Philip's cam will be CMOS and use similar software technology such as "Rightlight 2" like the new high performance Logitech cams....hmmm....if thats the case then I am sure the new cams rely on software for great performance. I cant be sure of this though. Looking at all the newer Philips cams, they seem to use CMOS.
On the other hand, maybe this newer cam WILL have the very latest CCD sensor....yummy, can't wait until they release it

Interesting. Unfortunately Philips have never had planet imagers on their minds when developing new webcams. Theres more money in selling them as actual webcams for yahoo chat etc.
