I'm interested in running the "Seeker" software for my kids. My computer is has a Pentium 4 and I have Windows XP. Running the
seeker compatibility test said my video card will not run the program. I need open GL 2 which my card will not update to.
I only have slots for an old school PCI card.
Is it worth buying a a 128 or 256 MB PCI video card to run the program? Will it not run so well?
I don't want to be disappointed after spending the money.

It's been a loooonnnggg time since I repaired (much less built) a PC with only PCI. I think it would be hard to locate a PCI card (and I don't recall any with over 64 Mb). With a P4 and XP, are you sure your video slot isn't AGP? The newer mobos sport PCIe slots, which is much different than PCI, despite the similarity in designation (you don't have any PCIe slots). I have two older AGP cards (takeoffs on upgrades) - you're welcome to try them, just pay for shipping.

Thanks for the offer Rusty. Actually I'm not positive they are PCI and not PCIe. Is there a good way to tell the difference?
Someone told me AGP are brown. Mine are white.

David, if you can find the make/model for the motherboard, the rest will fall into place. With a P4, I'm relatively certain you could have a PCI slot, but much more likely, an AGP slot, and certainly not an PCIe slot...although a PCIe slot is possible, it would be quite rare.

It might be cheaper to get a Barebone PC w/Midsize Case with AMD athlon 64 X2 5400 cpu fan for $140 and it should run that program better than an old P4 and be able to use PCIe cards if you want faster performance than the 128mb on-board video.
