Well, here's my first true imaging attempt ... M110 (because it was the first on the list of the CG-5 sky tour). It's noisy and full of authentic San Francisco light pollution. But, I'm still pretty proud of what a beginner can do with far from the best of equipment.

Last night I made my first attempt at imaging. I'm an utter novice, and this was the first night with a clear sky I've had since I got my telescope about a month ago (an two previous occasions a brief hole opened in the clouds for about 20 minutes and I was able to view the moon). I first attempted Mars with the Neximage camera. This is 407/2010 frames stacked in Registax and no post-processing.

The Orion Nebula, i believe. This was about forty .125 second exposures. I can't currently autoguide, so my exposure time is limited.

This is my first shot with my new Cannon 1000D. It is orion and I frankly have no idea what I am doing. I followed the guidelines in the Backyard Astronomers Guide.

O.K...my first attempt at AP. Taken 2-10-10 of Orion. Taken with an Explore Scientific 80mm APO triplet F/L 480mm F6 and a modded Canon XSi 450D, 40 second exposure - no processing. First time imaging use of all said equipment.

That's a great start. If you take a bunch more of those and stack them, you will get a great image. See what you get with 50x40sec or 100x40sec or even more.

Thanks Zach. I did take a bunch of subs in RAW format that night also (50 of them - 40 sec each) but I am still trying to figure out how to process. I have images Plus.

Hi Pat,

I use DeepSkyStacker (which is freeware) to stack the subs. It is very easy and there are step by step directions on the website.

Zach

My first real photograph. 20x30s lights, 10 darks, stacked in DSS, "processed" in Nebulsoity. By "processed", I mean that I moved the sliders around pretty much at random. I used an unguided Skywatcher 150AR on a Skywatcher EQ5P. The camera is an un-modded Canon Rebel XS controlled by Nebulosity. The shots were taken unguided (obviously) at about 30 degrees. I was listening to Springsteen and Dire Straits.

This is my first attempt in trying to shoot Jupiter back in Oct. Three out of the fifty pictures I took actually came out pretty decent. Shot with a Nikon DSLR through the xt8 14mm ep.

Ok my 2 first attempts, # 1 is the double cluster. The equipment used was an Olympus e-520 DSLR on the SN6 with a 20 second exposure. The night was partly cloudy with 10-20 MPH wind gusts. I had the ISO at 200 and I took the picture on my deck. This is what I learned:

1) Don't take picture on your deck
2) Don't take pictures when its windy

This weekend we got one of the few nights with clear sky the last half year. I used my camera for the first time and took my first pictures on the sky ever. Here is the results:

M101
6 x 120s
Binned 2x
http://www.gensa.se/images/astro/m101_6x120s_2bin.jpg

M13
10 x 240s
http://www.gensa.se/images/astro/m13_10x240s.jpg

I took about thirty 2 min exposures on M101 but as the clock was about 4 in the morning I left the equipment and went to bed for an hour. When I returned I discovered that the autoguider lost tracking after 6 exposures so the rest went straight to the trash. Thats why that picture is a bit vague.

Clear skies!

My very first attempt, from my kitchen, Nikon D300 10 Sec subs with 300mm 2.8 lens 30 images stacked in DSS. No modification of camera no filter used, heavy light pollution.
(so indoor shot without polar alignment and through double glass)
