"To sustain life, a planet must have a mass similar to that of earth, liquid water on its surface, an atmosphere and a similar orbital distance from its star as that of the earth from the sun."

I love this quote. Intelligent life on Earth is sooo egotistical. No clarification. No caveats...just life needs THESE things or it ain't there.

You would think the journalist has never read the Dune series or seen a picture of the ecosystem surrounding a hydrothermal vent...or even studied the Cantina scene from Star Wars.

Life on earth 'needs' those things because it evolved under those conditions. Life elsewhere would, of course, evolve under differing conditions and, presumably, look nothing like 'Earthlings'.

I completely agree, there are so many possibilities for life that i doubt we can completely discount anywhere as a possible starting point for some form of life-we just need to be more creative in how we think life can evolve!!!
