Hello Penny ,

You will find a lot of information about the identification code system of many Japanese made binoculars by clicking on to the following link .

http://www.europa.com/~telscope/jbcode.txt

Carl Wetzlar is one of those deliberately Bavarian SOUNDING names , used by several companies over the past half century or so , presumably to try to give the impression of the items being of superior quality .

Unfortunately for you , perhaps , quite the opposite is usually true !

Centre - focus binoculars of that style and vintage are very unlikely to be waterproof .

Regards , Kenny

Hi Penny ,

I'm sure I'm not really THAT wonderful , but pleased I could help you in some small way .

Sorry I cannot help you with identifying the year , although there ought to be a clue in the serial number .

Regards , Kenny

Copy & pasted from my original reply in Beginners Forum. Sort of same as Kenny said.

Carl Wetzlar were/are? one of the original 'Confuzaname' Japanese binocs of the 50s, 60s,70s. By using Carl Zeiss's first name and the city where they are made, they hoped (and succeeded) in attracting buyers thinking they were buying something of high quality. Most of their stuff was low end Bushnell type quality, but I understand they did have a few higher quality lines. I think the 'Aviation' line was good, maybe the 'Marine' was as well.

I had (might still have ... somewhere) the same pair. They were given to me for Christmas in the early 70's. They were quite well built and stood up to most of the bad handling I subjected them to, I did have to have them collimated once.

The coatings were poor by today's standards and the fov was fairly limited but the views were quite good. Not high end good but probably better than most sub $100 binoculars sold today.

I still remember the amazing views of comet West in 1975 in these binoculars ... and the smudge that was Halley in '86.

yes I think the view is good. I use it for bird watching which is fine.
Bad side is too big and heavy close to 3.5-4 lb I think.
