Mallincam First Light
      #2327765 - 04/14/08 11:14 PM

Well, I got tired of my indecision and borrowed a friends Meade 102ed/apo and LXD650 mount. Really only intended to set up the scope and familiarize myself with the LXD650 tonight. Got the mount set up no problem. Threw the scope on it and balanced that out. Played with the alignment, got that pretty close. What the heck....threw the eyepiece on it and called the wife and daughter for a tour of the usual suspects. Spent thrity minutes on the moon and saturn.

They got too cold and headed inside. Ah, heck lets see how easy this Mallincam thing is. Pulled the diagonal out. Put the Mallincam in. Set it up per instructions. Goto M42. Focused on the stars. Flipped it to 14 seconds. Nothing but stars. Hmmm, looks like the right stars but maybe a little south. Switch to 2 seconds, slewed a little north. Bingo, a little outline. Switch to 14 seconds and there it is.

Pretty Cool.... Didn't have time for more. I will have to play with it some more this week.

Now if I could only decide whether I want the CGE1100 or a FSQ106ED on an Atlas. I have been bouncing back and forth for three weeks.

AugeredIn, Having used a Mallicam with a 20" Newtonian and then a 14.5" fast Newtonian, I can tell you that I was roundly defeated in what could be seen in terms of color saturation and overall pleasant views with those two scopes and a Celestron CPC of Jack Heurkamp's with his Hyperstar lens. The 20" obviously showed more detail but the totality of the view would have to have been given to the Celestron. A CGE1100 is the "bomb" in my opinion. Bob Schilling

Well I decided. Aperature won out, but I am going to buy that FSQ as soon as I can hide it from the wife.
