Bino newbie here. Well, already have e pair of 10x50 Meade's but looking to upgrade on a budget. Looking at various reviews and almost went for the 25x 70 Barska's Then I found these atBinoculars.com Couldn't find any reviews on cw. Has anybody had any experience with these? At these prices it's hard to keep my fingers off the plastic. Any help would be appreciated. RT

Barska doesn't make a 25x70. Perhaps a typo, and you meant 15x70.
A 25x100 at $199 is a toss of the coin! Some have had good luck, others have not.
More important to remember is the cost of a tripod and head than can comfortably handle the 10 lbs. of weight.
Here is an example of the cost of a good tripod/head combo:
http://www.garrettoptical.com/product-p/b3246-501hdv.htm
Here is a link for something alittle smaller, but it still requires a good tripod and head combination to support it at 5.5 lbs.:

Hi Hallelujah. I was looking at the same thing (the weight) but an observer I have been out with designed and built his own wooden one similar to this but heavier duty. You're right about the Barska sizes. Must have been thinking about the 20x80 xtrail. and thanks for the reply. RT

Looks pretty nice, and a parallelogram is easier on the neck than a standard tripod and head combo.
The Barska 20x80mm X-Trail was on sale at Big 5 Sporting Goods for $75, but that was back in Jan. or Feb. I think.

Richard,
$200 for a 25x100 is awfully tempting. However... I can't guarantee that you'd get a lemon first try, but it's possiblle. Be prepared for multiple exchanges until you get a good one (if you ever do) as this model, like the Celestron 25x100s, is on the lower end of the quality scale of Chinese-manufactured binos.
Not to knock Binoculars.com. I've ordered 3 different binos from them. They're courteous, responsive, and very helpful. My 1st order just happened to be one of the Zhummel 25x100s. It had problems (I believe it was with the eyepieces and not the objectives). Then came the debate with self on whether to exchange them for another pair or put them towards something else. I swapped them (plus $$) for a pair of Vixen 12x80s. Wonderful binos, these! Then I decided I wanted more magnification so I swapped them (plus some more $$) for a pair of the Vixen 16x80s. Out of these 3 pair the 16s are the keepers; performance-wise they're beautiful, both mechanically and visually. They're also much more enjoyable to use as they weigh only half what the Zhummels weigh and, being shorter, are much more manageable. I noticed thay I didn't give up much in the way of light-gathering power, either. Images in the Vixens are somewhat brighter than in the Zs - no doubt at least in part because of the 5mm exit pupil vs, 4mm for the Zs, and possibly superior coatings. FOV is a bit over 4 degrees, too, which is very nice.
I also ended up with a nice version of that other absolute essential: a solid, sturdy head/tripod combo. It easily supported the Z's 10 lb weight, and performs effortlesslly with the 5 lb Vixens. This tripod (purhased in late 2006 with the Zs) listed for $250. Binoculars.com was out of the $200 model I wanted, so they let me have the more expensive one for $200. Really nice of them!
Although most bino folks here would probably opt for a premium Garrett or Oberwerk model in the 80mm range as they're considerbaly less costly than the Vixens and they've earned a pretty good reputation, I used the Vixens here since that's what I own. Also, when I returned the Zs I noticed that Binoculars.com didn't carry Garretts; otherwise I might have gone with the 15x- or 22x85s rather than the Vixens. Be that as it may, I have absolutely no complaints about the Vixens; to me they're more than worth their relatively high price.
So, if you have nice, dark skies, don't mind the weight and ungainliness of the big 100mms, have the cash for a substantial head/tripod combo, and are willing to gamble on a first-time keeper or play the return/exchange game, you may well be happy with the big Zs. Otherwise - and this is just me opinion based on personal experience - you may well be more satisfied with an instrument in the 80-85mm range. Then again there's the added caution of actual objective size/magnification vs advertised as recently desrcibed here by Ed Zarenksi - a real eye-opener of a report, I might add.
Hopefully this will help you out some and not just confuse the issue more (after proof-reading I see that this message reads more like a Vixen ad than I intended).

Thanks for all the help and advice. Ive decided to go for it. I've read all 56 reviews on binoculars.com and the only one rating it below a 4 out of 5 was somebody who couldn't find Saturn's rings in it. Didn't say what end he was looking thru . Besides, If it turns out bad I can always return it. If I don't order it I'll be kicking myself for a long long time. RT

I have these and the quality is "fine". Not the best optics in the world but sufficient. The problem, as others have suggested, is that you'll need to get involved in cumbersome mounts. Sure, you can make a homemade parallel mount but it increases the hasle factor immensely. Not grab and go anymore like your 10x50's (you can lie on your back to minimize shaking bu that's not ideal). I find myself either pulling out the scope or using smaller binos. The 25x100's are neither small enough to be easy to use nor powerful enough to show the "rings of Saturn", etc. clearly.

richard7,
Even if you get a good one, which I hope you do, don't expect an inexpensive 25x100mm to be good for planets. Some of the very best giant astronomy binoculars have a difficult time with planets. Also, keep in mind that the rings of Saturn are 'not' at their best, and will not be for some time. Saturn is going through its cycle where soon the rings will be seen, or not seen, "on edge". That is more than likely why the one reviewer was complaining about not being able to see the rings of Saturn, due to its current cycle, and probably due to the inexpensive optics and optical coatings.
I have viewed Saturn with my two 30x binoculars and it is still quite small at that magnification.
Part of the fun of "bargain hunting" is getting an acceptable 'working' model in a giant astronomy binocular.
If you do get a good one try viewing the Orion Nebula and the Double Cluster, these two should should be eye-poppers depending upon the amount of light pollution that you may or may not have in your local area.

Hi All , I am from India , and read with great interest on all bino discussions . Having had a 20x80 , I wanted more especially after reading all on 25x100.Since you get Binos 25x100 at about 3 times the cost here , I wished I was here in US. I am here on an assignment now and then wanted a 25x100 .However since I have astro goodies already (fairly good investment from Indian standards )I did not want to invest much , The options : second hand Binos from oberwerk,GO,Celestron,Zhumell,Barska (even30x100), humvee etc. from EBAY/ASTROMART/CLOUDYNIGHTS. Since a Bino itself is incomplete without mount tripod , I was getting ready to invest another 250 odd. Zhumell 25x100 new is like cost of a second hand other 25x100 but not available come May. Barska 30x100 mixed resposne on Forums. Contacted members on astromart/cloudynights , with old unsold ads as to 25x100. Also gave a ad in Binoastronomy -yahoo group. Finally purchased a Burgess 25x100 . The moment I hand held them for Max 2 minutes , I realised a good Mount is indespensable. Then a rigorous search on ebay/amazon as to 501 bogen combo or other heavy duty tripod or Orion paragon plus. This became another project in itself for which my company had not sponsered my visit here. I would have liked to go for a zhumell but it was out of question due to no availability before may.
I finally got a better than bogen 501 combo , a second hand samson quickset tripod for 127 shipped on ebay auction capable of holding about 35 pounds. I am very happy with the entire combo for 327 dollars. and views are amazing , except that I need to enjoy from a dark site more. Sorry this became more of a 25x100 / tripod combo hunt rather than zhumell discussion Thanks-Mohit

Love my 25x100! I’ve looked thru three set of these binos. The first set were bought by a good friend. The collimation was dead on and the color error was fine for 100mm binos. The only downside was a little flare from bright, 1st mag and above, stars. This could be reduced with careful eye position. The second set was my anniversary gift from my wife. When I got them I found the outer and inner boxes were badly damaged and the case was holed and badly dented. Needless to say I had no faith in the binos, but to my surprise they performed a little better than my friends. The collimation was dead on and the color error was the same. The flaring even seemed to be a little less than the first set. I was very unhappy to discover that I couldn’t just return the case I had to return everything!
Telescope.com cross shipped new 100’s and the third set was every bit as and the second set without the damage to the case!

Just for sake of alleviating confusion, you probably mean telescopeS.com as the other is Orion's web site.
