Nice article. I have been noodling over the purchase of a Rigel Quickfinder. I wonder how it would compare?

Well, IMO, even the first setting on this finder - at least the WO version (as on most RDF's) is a bit too bright. The rigel gets much dimmer, pulses and provides a calibrated ring for star hopping.
However - if I were picking one for a refractor, I'd get the MRF (or other RDF). A big dob the telrad, a small or medium dob or SCT the Rigel.

How does one align this finder?
Even with my refractor, i've continued to use the telrad. Can't help it, I just love using the big guy. I take it off the Dob and pop it on the refractor.

I can see how size would make a big difference on a small refractor, an an advantage for the MRF. The Rigel QF seems about right for an SCT (I think the hieght to see over the OTA would be a bonus).

I bought my MRF [edit] for quite a good price. The all metal construction is attractive and gives the impression of quality and it is much much smaller than a Telrad. My window has some sort of reflective optical coating (I guess to bounce the LED light) which does reduce transmission. Trouble is I still haven't mounted it onto my NightHawk as the dovetail is due to arrive from Burgess who sells it for a mere $9.

I own the WO's version, I like the MRF and find it easy to use, it could use a dimmer setting though. On the dimmer stars or DSOs, the MRF at it’s lowest setting is still to bright and washes out the target, although it gets me close enough when using a low power EP in my scope.

I have had a Telrad on my 6" f8 newt. for years and have no complaints.
I recently purchased the Rigel finder, which I use with my 15x70 binos.
Bottom line, I much prefer the Telrad. I am using the Rigel simply because the Telrad is too big for binoculars. The Rigel at least has a circle instead of a dot like some of the other smaller finders I looked at.

After my Telrad, I really like these type finders. My 1st one came with my Lightbridge, and when I replaced it with the Telrad, I mounted it on my grandnephews ETX-90, which helped that scope immensely. After acquiring the AT66ED, I bought the Burgess MRF to mount on it. Perfect finder for this small scope. I have even mounted it on my air rifle to take out turtles on my pond. Works good for that!
