Mare Crisium, Picard and others new
      #2327949 - 04/15/08 01:19 AM Attachment (16 downloads)

Hello all,

I could use some help with lunar geography so I thought I'd ask the Lunies here for some help. I attempted taking a few images on Friday 4/11 that I am considering working with to submit for the Beginners Imaging Bright challenge (which is Crater Picard in Mare Crisium), but I wanted to make sure I had the right target...

After looking through the Virtual Moon Atlas (Expert) I believe I have identified the following craters, but I want to solicit a second (or third, or fourth, etc. )opinion...

The image is not as sharp as I'd like, but I don't get some of the good seeing conditions as others from where I image.

Please let me know if these look correct to you.

Thanks for looking.

Here's a wider angle view of Mare Crisium for reference.

You've labelled them correctly. What telescope and camera did you use?

Thanks, I was hoping that I was reading the Atlas correctly, but the details in the program are just enough off from what I see through the scope that I wasn't sure.

As for details: I used a C9.25 with a Philips SPC900NC webcam. My alignment was off so the tracking wasn't that great (hence the artifacts in the upper right corner of the Mare Crisium shot). I used K3CCDTools v1 and WcCTRL for capture and exposure respectively, aligned, stacked and processed in Registax v4, post processed for color and some cropping in Photoshop Elements 6. The first shot is with a 2x powermate, the second is prime focus.

I think I've found my collimation is a little off, my polar alignment is a definitely off, and the optics were rather dirty (but the scope should have been cooled down acceptably).

I hope to have clear skies a couple of days after the full moon, the Virtual Moon Atlas lists 3-4 days after New or 2 days after Full as the best times to get good detail on the crater. This was taken at First Quarter.

Thanks for looking.

It's worth chasing very good collimation, it does make a noticeable difference on resolving fine details. Also, I wouldn't bother imaging in colour for the Moon, IIRC there's an option to image in black and white in the SPC900 capture menu.

I thought it was interesting that Picard was the target for this month's imaging competition as it's quite a small crater and you need a fair bit of magnification to resolve the interior detail.
