I would be interested in doing some observing with someone from my area (Wichita Falls, Texas - Lawton, Oklahoma). Maybe there could be some sort of list of folks interested. There could always be a before hand meeting in a public place to develop a little trust or find any compatability problems.

I would be interested in this too with someone from my area(somerset county Pa). using before hand meetings would be good idea as well as using Pms for specific info like where our observing sites are & when we'll be there

If marketed, this kind of forum could be a draw to the site, not just an additional forum. People could come from other sites just to sign up and find a buddy.
I disagree with it being restricted to registered users though. Not because it's really a bad idea, but common sense would dictate any exchange of personal info be done in a PM or e-mail, and letting prospective members see that connections are being made can only draw people in.

That's the problem. If it's posted in a regular forum, it gets lost right away because there are other things being posted. In this kind of forum, just put your city in the title and it makes it simple for people to browse.  Plus people who go there will inherently be looking for someone instead of info about something else...

I like the idea too. I've already gotten invitations by being a member of CN and you can see by my posts that I'm mostly a reader and not so often a poster (meaning it took very little exposure of my location in the avatar to spawn an invitation).
The other idea is to have coordinated 'rallies' that involve multiple folks that coordinate for a fair weather event (if cloudy the event is canceled). This would be far short of a star party and would be a more informal gathering of a couple of 'buddies'. That would minimize the danger, real or perceived, of meeting strangers from the internet. Still, coordination should be limited to members (which is no guarantee) to help preserve the privacy of the event.
The example divers list is a good idea. I'm sure the divers must have thought of the security issue as well. Let's face it, astronomy isn't the only thing that involves a lot of expensive equipment. I wonder how they handle these issues?

You know, if this were a forum for something a bit more pedestrian like sports or some activity where we might meet the cast of 'Deliverance' I would be more worried about things like getting mugged or robbed or whatever.
Astronomy (and diving for that matter) tends to attract a more intelligent crowd of people. Most of us here can afford a couple of spare dollars, or else we wouldn't own the equipment we need to feed our addiction. People of intelligence are a lot less likely to commit a crime than people who aren't. As for people who 'prowl the web just LOOKING for someone to rob; well, that's the kind of paranoia our society has overfed us because it just happens to sell tabloids and get good ratings. I choose not to live my life on that level and a bunch of others here obviously feel the same way...

I'm not too worried about the people that post here. I've found that most niche hobby sites are full of very helpful, honest people.
But this place does have quite a few Lunatics though.

This is a great idea !! IV'e been into this hobby HARD for thee years ,and I have yet to meet anyone close by to share my enthusiasm with. I casualy ask around but no luck I have seen other addresses on this web site and when contacted , are too far away. I have a nice dark , secluded site with out building ,heat , red lighting ,power posts, etc. I am situated in ALLEGHENY county N.Y. LITTLE GENESSE township
