Hello all,
I thought I would share my first ever attempt at afocal astrophotography. This is a pic I took Sep 2, 2007 at about 0700 UT from my back yard. It captures the Serpentine Ridge
and the top lit portion of Posidonius. I love that look. There are many prominant features to the south as well, but I won't bother to list them. I'll leave that to the more "astute" lunar enthusiasts! I will say however, that I like the dark look of Theophilus!
I used a cheap 2.0 megapixel Kodak camera, and a 21 mm Orion Stratus with an 8" SCT.
As for the nomenclature of the ridge, I still prefer to call it the Serpentine Ridge, and not Dorsa Smirnov. To me, Smirnov is something I have with a little orange juice on the occasional Saturday night.

Very nice afocal catch - really worth of at least a toast of the good old Smir! Lots of nice detail present and lots of fine texture - plus the terminator really comes out beautifully!
Thanks for sharing this with us!
Be well!

That's funny. That's pretty much what I do anytime I observe that wrinkle in the Moon. You don't suppose...

Impressively sharp image, especially for an afocal non-stacked shot

Thank you everyone for your comments. They mean a lot to a newby like me! Now if I can only master the focus for my digital rebel 400. I tried prime focus on M3 and M42. Out of focus. I'll be out again as soon as the weather clears.
You never know what you can do until you try. I thought my cheap point and shoot camera might come in handy for afocal images, so I tried it. I think I may have found a use for it! The collimation on my 8" SCT was pretty good ,(although it could have used some tweaking),and add to that a good eyepiece and I'm not too surprised with the way the image turned out. Just goes to show what a good eyepiece and collimated scope can do.

Have to share this tiny incidence with you - namely did some sudden observing about two months ago with my SkyWatcher 150 Pro Mak-Cass on the good old Moon - having had just one glass of red wine to go along - after a (very short while) begun to wonder what is w r o n g with my scope... well. The cap was on ..

Ha ha ha it happens. I won't try it again though. Moving $2000 worth of equipment when one is "tipsy" is never a prudent thing to do...
