John, what is the advantage of saving in fits3p format if using a one shot color camera or a grey scale imager without rgb filters? Just to have more subs to choose from?

I like using the FITS3P/Save All Uncombined Images with my DSI as it saves all of the source data from the camera (no compression losses) and it gives me the most flexible options for aligning and combining my images later using either Envisage or DeepSky Stacker. I also use FITS3P with my Pro just to keep things consistent; in this case the file is actually just a FITS, but since I often mage with both a DSI and Pro on the same night (and sometimes at the same time) I like to set both cameras to operate in exactly the same way (fewer things to remember when I'm tired in the middle of the night).

I ran a few frames last night and got two sets of images for each capture, one filename.fts and one filenameL.fts. The one without the appended "L" is about 3 meg and the files with it are about 9 meg.

What is the difference?

The chip used in the DSI provides two sets of data; color and luminance. The developers of the DSI originally thought the luminnce data was just an average of the color data and ignored it. However, they realized there's actually additional data in the luminance, so in later versions of Envisage they made that data available in a separate file. The difference doesn't look really significant so in normal operation you can just ignore them unles you want to process the luminance data separately from the color data (which can be very effective). Personally, I like to take luminance data using the color sharp color model and combine it with color data taken using the color soft model. I believe this is one method of squeezing the maximum performance out of the DSI and an easy way to get an introduction to LRGB imaging.

Great thread! You guys are talking way over my head, but I just purchased a DSI-c and will likely be trying it out on my daughters ETX-70.

Difference is, I will be using the actual ETX 70 mount, albeit...on the deluxe tripod, so I guess I could polar align. (which I never do with my LX90)

I too like to squeeze everything I can out of the least expensive option. I have been using my LPI for three years, and I still like it!

I will sit back and listen a bit. I have not used "Drizzle" nor have I really tried to photograph any DSO's. Strictly used Envisage for planetary work only.
