O.Richard Norton encylopedia
      #2343977 - 04/22/08 08:52 AM

Way back before this forum got started I asked about books to help identifing meteorites.Walter suggested both books by O.Richard Norton.I orderd them 3/22 and received rocks from space acouple of weeks ago but just got an e-mail from Amazon that they are unable to find the encylopedia of meteorites and they will continue looking but would not commit themselves as to how long it may take.
I intend to wait for as long as it takes amazon to find one but thought one you pros out there may have another source
for the book.

Hi Dick,

That encyclopedia is a tough cookie. Used, it typically sells for $75 or thereabouts, if you can find it. I don't own a copy yet. I am thinking of combing my local library system and see if I can borrow a copy until I can find one to buy.

Did you try eBay and eBay stores?

Regards,

Amazon had it new for 65$,also said used were available.Rocks from space will keep me busy for awhile.I haven't even started to read it yet,Iv'e been stuck on looking at all the different photos anyway.I'll give them a couple more weeks before start looking elsewhere.Just thought I could get some other sources lined up mean while.
I'll let you know what happens, their price is worth the wait.

Hi Dick,

Go to your local library to see if they have it. If not, do an inter-library loan. You may have to pay a nominal shipping charge, but at least you can salivate over the pictures and decide whether you want to really buy the book. I did not realize it was out of print and getting so expensive!

When the current Catalog of Meteorites (COM) was published a few years ago, it sold for $150.00. I think it is way much more than that now. A shortened online version of the COM can be found here:

I am about half way through it now, reading a few pages a night. Lots of great info on chondrites of all classes. I'm just into the differentiated meteorites now (achondrites). I was surprised at how thin the section is on the irons, though.

Overall, I like the book. I took igneous and metamorphic petrology in college, so much of the mineralogy and microscope text is familiar (or at least coming back!). The pics are beautiful. If you are not well grounded in mineralogy, you really only have to remember details on a couple of species (olivene and pyroxene) as it seems the iron content is what sorts out most of the types.

The chondrites were very thoroughly organized, moving from group to group with discussion on what characterized a particular class from another. There are also some nice tables at the end to help you locate info on particular finds and falls.

It's definitely not a light read but not out of reach for an interested collector.

Clear skies.

Steve, thanks for your review. Since most of us have no background concerning minerals, that's the biggest fear, is getting a book that one cannot begin to understand. This book seems to fit the bill for us.

I will be looking to get a copy!

hi all,

I've been somewhat lurking on this forum and there has been a lot of interesting threads on stuff that falls from the wild blue yonder.

My usual "home" on CN is Stellar Media and rather than post there, I thought this thread is where it's worth mentioning that O. Richard Norton has a new book on Meteorites published by Springer ... http://www.springer.com/astronomy/book/978-1-84800-156-5

I've a copy on order at the moment from Amazon and should be a good substitute for the Cambridge book which is a toughie to procure. I actually had a copy of the Cambridge Encyclopedia but gave it to a visiting lecturer who spoke to our club on meteorites (it was the least we could do when he declined an honorarium).

All the best,

John

Please give us a review after you receive the book-it looks from the review like a rewrite of "Rocks from Space".

That does look interesting but $40 is a bit steep for a soft cover field guide. I think I'd want to take a look at it before plunking down the change.

I called Cambridge books in N.Y and was informed that Nortons Encylopedia is no longer in print an not available anywhere in the world. They gave me a couple of out of print book stores phone numbers and they even had no idea of where to go.
So if anyone out there has one,you have a collectors item, congratulations.
Cambridge books told me I can expect Amazon to notify me telling me the same.

I got a new copy from AbeBooks about 2 months ago for $75 + $3 S&H

I just got through reading/skimming the book-beautiful pictures, a lot of data, but not easy reading like Rocks from Space.
