Hi,

I use it. I like it very much now that they have a Calendar add-on called Lightning. For me its the only real alternative to Micro$oft Outlook. I would also recommend Open Office or Star Office by Sun Microsystems (all these programs are free.

cya,

Paul

I've been using it as my only email program for some time. Hasn't caused any problems.

I've used it along with Firefox in both Windows and Linux for almost 10 years. They've had different names in the early days. I'm totally satisfied with both products.

I have a question about Thunderbird. In Outlook you could change a setting so you had to double click a message to open it. I like that because I don't want to open the junk mail to delete it. In Thunderbird, when I highlight the message to delete it, it opens that message. Is there a similar setting like Outlook has in Thunderbird?

I turn off the preview pane (in all my mail programs)...that requires a double-click to open it in a new window.

I can right click on a message to select it without opening it, and that also pops up a menu with a delete option.

F8 toggles preview pane on and off. When on the message opens with a single click. When off it takes a double click to open. This is the mode you want. In View/Layout the last item should be unchecked.

Thanks, Everyone!I tried to right click, thinking that would just highlight it, but it still opened the message. I followed your directions, Artic Eddie, and unchecked the message pane, and now I can click once to delete and twice to read.

Hi,

FWIW, I found an addon for Thunderbird that syncs your ipod contacts and calendar. Best of all its free! It is called Mozpod.

I use Thunderbird 2 and I particularity like it's built in spam filtering. Set mine up so that spam automatically gets deleted. Between my ISP's filter and Thunderbirds, 99% of spam gets junked before it reaches my inbox. Thunderbird also has a button to mark any junk mail that does get through which is then deleted.

I have two pop email accounts. With Outlook I couldn't send emails from my account with my old ISP unless I was connected through them. But with Thunderbird it lets me send mail from my old account through my new ISP's SMTP server.

The only thing I miss from outlook express is the ability to edit the source html of an email. But I don't really need that much.

I love the Spam filter... It's a "Learning" filter also.

I have mine set to use a "JUNK" folder that auto deletes after 4 days. Just in case something slips by...

Any clue if there's a way to program the filter to recognize Russian? I get at least 50 russian spam messages a day...

I would assume it would recognize any language if you got the language installed. It matches keywords that are similar, as well as the tracking info in the header, and title/sender info... As you flag more and more as "Spam", it compares each similar to the last, and learns from that... If you "Spam" ALL other languages other than English, I would assume that it would automagically flag all other languages as spam.

What I did with mine to stop US spam was to set up a message rule so that any messages with " $" get auto deleted. Maybe you can find something similar in common for the Russian spam. Use view source to look inside the spam message without opening it.

I did originally set mine up to use just a $ sign, but some non spam got deleted where the mail contained a Blockquote tag which included a $ sign.
