To all

I am quite new to CN. I have not read all the other posts in regard to light pollution yet.

I just wanted to share my experiences with you about the local city lighting authorities here in the Portland Oregon area. When I built my home 20 years ago, I thought I was in a darker than usual area for night sky. However I noticed that some of the street lights had shrouds or collars around them to direct the light down and onto the pavement.
There were a couple adjacent street lights near my property that exhibited 'light trespass' into my homes windows so I called the local authotities and explained that these lights inhibited my sleep as they shone into my family's bedroom windows. I did not mention that I was an astronomer.

The lighting people were out within 2 daysw to install shrouds around the lights as they respcted the fact that this is actually listed as a health issue that can deter ones restful sleep. Many city lighting authorities are well aware of it so I would encourage others to be pro-active about this.

Mark

Mark, a belated Welcome to Cloudy Nights! Glad to have you join us!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the lights in your neighborhood; also glad that they recognize that indeed, sleeplessness is a health issue.

Another battle won. Let's keep the ball rolling. A little bit at a time will improve things overall. I believe the cost of electricity will help our cause greatly.
