Probably the camera that took the picture.

But from what I read the camera was self powered and recorded movies in a cassette locally, so then there wouln't be a need for a cable...or am I wrong?

    Rick,
    Nice try

Not sure if they camera had it's own power or not. I am not sure what kind of "portable cameras" were available back then.

I think I read that the cable was powering one of the other instruments that had been laid out, I forget which one. I seem to recall a discussion on the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal that they were concerned about tripping over them.

Well iI got this picture from the link Dave provided. It's the same area as the previous picture I posted but from a different angle. It seems from this one that the cable is feeding an instrument layed on the surface (white tripod) in the background behind the US flag. Anyone knows what that instrument was?

That does look like the television camera. So I'd guess that's what the cable was from.

    How about some links?

And for the record, NASA images are in the public domain.

Yes, they are. "Public domain" generally doesn't apply here, but we do allow NASA pics. But to post them here, our TOS still must be complied with.

I posted links. Below is the TOS definition for posting NASA, etc. images.

    Quote:

Posting of NASA/NOAA images and the images of other government agencies is permitted in context provided the following conditions are met: 1) The respective agency permits that sort of use for the photo, 2) the photo is clearly labeled/credited, and 3) a link is provided to the site from which the photo was obtained.

    Sorry for the confusion!

Refer to this map. The cable is almost certainly to the TV camera.

Steph removed the picture because of the aliens in it.
