The PC That Topsy Built
      #2367841 - 05/02/08 10:15 PM

Although I used to build custom gamers' PCs (read: Overclocked), my own primary PeeCee is almost 5 years old. Due to being absorbed with imaging, I've decided to upgrade, but on a schedule I've never before endured. This time, recognizing the ordeal of configuring a new PeeCee, I've decided to go the "sale route". I have a pretty complete list of what the new PeeCee will consist of, and haunt NewEgg for sales. So far I've snagged a PCP&C 750W PS ($50 off at $199.95) and an EGA 8800GT video card ($169 after rebate). I watch the rebates, as I'm in no hurry, really. Anyone else as chintzy as me?

Yeah, I'm a shopper extraordinaire but I just buy whole systems now...too lazy to build 'em anymore.

I prefer the convenience of laptops these days and while I have a couple desktop PCs, one is serving as a server and the other only gets used for Photoshop because I've been too lazy to install it elsewhere. I got tired of constantly having to upgrade. My desktop's video card is starting to go (memory errors) and I need a new one, but I just haven't bothered yet. I'll probably stick one of the old ones I have laying around in it instead of buying a new one.

I have a Xbox 360, Wii and a PS3 for games.

I shintz out and went the Dell refurb route and got a quad core 755 in the small form factor. Saved a bundle (although not as fast as one would think) and it's much smaller than previous chassis with more umph than a laptop. Over all I'm happy with it.

I used newegg for my last two computers, and I was probably chintzier than you, Rusty. My processors are AMD64 single-core, 939 motherboards, my video cards are in the $70 range, and I use on-board audio rather than separate cards. A 400-450W power supply runs them well, and my particular computer case, with the brand name "Excellent Computer Case" holds it all just fine, for $25.
I'll be reusing the cases and power supplies for future upgrades, I hope.

I should mention that the "Excellent Computer Case" didn't come from newegg. I found that in a "Computer Renaissance" store in Vegas.

Elaine didn't like it because of the font on the box. I bought it anyway.

I built my desktop from parts from tigerdirect.com. I reused the C: drive from my old computer. Gamer's chassis and reasonable speed for 5 years ago. Dual-boot Linux and Windows XP.

My new laptop is a Dell 1420 running Vista. Once tuned and all the unnecessary services are disabled, it runs much better than the desktop. I'm starting to use the laptop for almost everything these days and I got the extended batteries (9 hours) for observing.

I bought my video card from Tiger Direct.
Added memory from another discount warehouse.

I shop for bargains too.

I prefer to use old parts from the old machine, buy some new ones (typically the motherboard and CPU) reusing things like the case, PS, video card etc.

Things have changed so much in the PC world I would have had to buy everything but the chassis. After all was said and done the refurb route was cheaper. I strongly suspect there will not be parts from this unit I can reuse down the road. sigh.

I just went through that with this last build. The only usable parts from the old machine were the case and the CDROM drive. It just made more sense at that point to build a completely new system and retire the old one to the HTPC pasture.

Sheeesh - give me some credit - XP only; I've given up self-flagellation for Lent (next year, in 2009). I do have a copy of Vista ratholed for future use, but so far, I see no reason to install it. To be honest, I was probably one of the last adopters of Win95, and certainly one of the recalcitrants for Win98 (and only after I wrote a few routines to expunge it from my PeeCees).

Anyway, I'm still vacillating about X35/38/48 core logic, and DDR2/DDR3 RAM, but hopefully things will settle down in the next few weeks/months/years...

I started on the "chintzy" route and ended up spending a little more than I'd planned.

We have a 6+ year old PC running XP, (1.8ghz P4, 1 gig ram), that was staring to go. It's still alive, but I'm trying to get all our files over to the new system ASAP. After that it'll become our full-time Linux server until it croaks.

In researching low-cost PC's, (I game on game machines so I don't need high performance), I was shocked to see eMachines systems come up as recommendations on many sites! eMachines used to be the Packard Bell of PC's. From what I can tell their reputation has turned around in the last year or so. I suspect its because they don't make custom systems, if you browse their desktops they have TWO choices, system A or B, no options, so it must be easier to do QA at the factory.

$400 for a dual core AMD with 2 gigs of ram and a 7200 RPM SATA drive was too much to resist.

But I didn't like the idea of VGA only output and gobbling 256 megs of system ram for video, and that's where the slide began.

I did the frugal thing, and picked up a dated GeForce 8400 with 256 megs and a 16x PCIe connector. I realize the eMachines is only 8x PCIe, but unlike some other manufactures eMachines doesn't put the little lock-out tabs in the slot so you can actually use a 16x card at 8x. So far so good.

Opening the case I was very impressed. Much more "open" than the typical brand name PC. Very neatly wired, plenty of space for a small tower, and no proprietary gizmos to hack thorough. (Bear in mind our old PC was a Sony VAIO. If anyone's having trouble figuring out how to swap out a CD rom from one of those, PM me. ) The only thing that slowed down the upgrade was the fact that the slot openings in the back of the case had the covers spot welded on. You can easily twist them off with your fingers, but I would have preferred the usual covers.

One not so good surprise is that the power supply is only 300 watts, and the card needed at least 350 with 20 amps on the 12 volt rails! D'oh!

I decided to buy a bit more than I need since once the XP system is down I planned to put the 200 gig HD in the new system. So I shelled out more money for a 500 watt PS with 22 amp 12 volt rails.

So the grand total is now almost $560! But as I said I'm not a gamer. The system runs well, and to my surprise I actually LIKE Vista, so hopefully this is all I'll have to spend on it for a while. And after all that, even with my picky eyes, I can't tell the difference between the VGA and DVI! But my video scores went from 3 to 4.5 in the Vista benchmark, and I have more free ram and a PS that will last me for a while, so it's not a total waste.

A computer can end up being like a telescope, a real money pit. Buy one new thing, and you may find you need another new thing to make it work.

"I think I'll get a high power planetary eyepiece....

WOW! This is great!

...but now it's a real pain tracking it, I think I need a motor drive."

When I had my business, and built custom PCs, I would migrate my home gaming PC to the office; that way I always had a backup for the server, which would come home for the house backup. That paid off once, when the server with an Abit mobo of the blown-capacitor days, failed, and we were back up the next day. Now what I have is an Asus mobo with a P4 2.6 OC'd to 3.2 GHz, but only 1 GB (DDR) RAM, and it's not worth adding more.

My wish list as of today is:

Case: LIAN LI PC-V1200Bplus II ATX Mid Tower Case (Always loved the Lian-Lis - the one under my desk is on its fourth ot fifth mobo; the V12000B+ II is wider and deeper, and has three 120mm fans)
CPU: Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache; with an aftermarket HSF, likely go to 3.8 GHz and up)
HSF:
1. Swiftech H20-220 Compact CPU Water Cooling Kit or,
2. Noctua NH-U12P or -C12P
3. ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler (always been a fan of Zalman's coolers, but Noctua and others are leaving 'em behind)
4. Scythe SCNJ-CU1000 120mm Ninja Copper CPU Cooler
5. Thermalright Ultra 120
Mobo: Undecided, favoring an X38 board or an X48 (DDR2 compatible, since DDR2 OCs better)
1. ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard
2. ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard
3. A couple of contenders from DFI...
HDDs (X2 in Raid 1): Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s. (There are reported issues with this drive in Highpoint RocketRAID add-on controllers, so we'll see.)
RAM: 4 GB mid-level DDR2 or DDR3...OCZ, Geil, Corsair, whatever's on sale.

But I'm in no hurry yet, although I'm anxious to be able to process astro-photos a bit faster. Building the new box will only take a couple of hours. Loading the OS and the software, another 20-30, and burning in and nudging up the OC, a few more hours...
