Carancas meteorite new
      #2368965 - 05/03/08 01:52 PM

Been reading about the incident & i can't get over the fact that it's being left to rust away underground.

I can't believe a 3rd world, financially depressed country like Peru will not take advantage of the situation & exhume the rock & make what would obviously be a huge profit.

Seem's a shame the meteorite is being left to be destroyed by the elements when it could be used to help the people.

There has been a large amount of material removed, I even have a piece in my collection. I was under the impression all that could be removed had been?

The main mass still remains in the crater.
I read an article yesterday (should've saved it) saying there had been security on post for the crater 24/7 since the fall & that the government was removing it for transfer to border points to counter increasing turmoil.
It was a Peruvian based news bit that i'll try to find again & post a link.
