This ancient structure has been one of my favorite imaging targets over the years. In this image (Aptil 15, 2008 at 01:50 UT) it was fairly close to the terminator and as a result a fair amount of detail is present. I used a Mewlon 250 (at 6000 mm FL)and an Lu075M camera.

Hi Rick, fantastic, almost spooky catch of the Deslandres area.
The play of the shadows in this pic is unbeliavably strong -and the low angle of the light lifts up an amazing richness of details on the plateau!
Those walls of the craters bathing in the sunrays amid the overall darkness bear a strong resemblance of rings - or tiny pieces of chains of light...
Wonderful image, Rick! Thanks for sharing this with us!

Timo,
Yes the contrasts are interesting so near the terminator. Here is a comparison image I took the very next day with the same scope etc.

Yup - it's the same place - but the feeling is quite gone!
I think this is one of the profound things that makes the good old Moon such an interesting object to observe. The eternal play of light and shadows provides us with splendor that we seldom can share - only try to remember.
But in your original pic, Rick, this rare feeling of presence - to be able to actually witness something wonderous - is strongly present. This comparison of yours is very good and educational in demonstrating the difference!
The lights and shadows paint the picture - and the good old Moon has a never-ending story of those to provide!
Especially in your latter pic, the V-shape formation of tiny Hell Q -craterlets is fantastically visible! Attached please find a crop of LAC 112 presenting this formation.
Be well!

Hi Rick, really like the *second* image of Deslandres you posted--very detailed image. Do you have a larger, less compressed version you can share? I'm curious as to what resolution you got and it is difficult to tell from the 60kb jpeg...

Easily one of my top ave objects on the moon, others are Katena Day and Katena Kraft. I love that clean micro detail in crater chains . Wow - thanks or the imaging. Really great stuff. LOL, there just arent enough micro crater chains on the moon!!
