Ubuntu 8.04 and the other Ubuntu variants like Kubuntu (which I'm running) and Xubuntu. The different versions have different nick names. Ubuntu 7.10 is called Gutsy Gibbon.

Perhaps this page will explain it better for you. Ubuntu Wikipedia Page
Hardy Heron is just the code name for the current Ubuntu Linux distribution. Kind of like Windows Vista is the current version of Windows and Windows XP is the previous version of Windows.

Just to add in my 2c worth.
I downloaded and installed it onto my laptop and onto a spare machine I had lying around. I'm pretty familiar with the more server based products of Fedora and CentOS and was interested to see how much the Linux desktop had come on. I use a Mac as a client and CentOS as servers at home.
I have to say I was pretty impressed. The setup (with the exception for me of disk partitioning) was as good as any other Linux distribution and was probably the easiest I've come across.
It just tended to work and took around 30 minutes to install. The default desktop is based around Gnome rather than KDE. If you don't know the difference then it's not going to bother you. The supplied apps, Firefox, OpenOffice, Evolution all worked out of the box and are the equal of anything on the MS Desktop.
I asked it to upgrade automatically and it did that, no rebooting was required, contrast that with the eternel hell of of download patch, reboot, download patch reboot of Microsoft.
I had to upgrade my graphics card to get the snazzy new graphics through Compiz Fusion (my upgrade was to a 4 year old graphics card though).
I have to say it looks good and works well. No crashes, no problems. I'd probably wait a few weeks if you are unfamiliar with Linux as Hardy Heron is quite new, let the right upgrades come though but thats only a matter of choice. I think its pretty rock solid, though not everyone has produced packages for their software for it yet.
-------------------- Thanks,
Rob

Kubuntu is the KDE version of ubuntu.
The upgrade feature is nice and I wouldn't classify the MS update as eternal hell. Apple's OSX requires the same process: download, reboot, install. I'm glad both of these companies have this feature. With that said, let's leave this subject and return to Hardy Heron.
I finally found my old notebook (under the bed where a certain 8 year old hid it! ) so I will upgrade it today to the latest flavor of ubuntu.

My 'Linux Junkie' collegue was very disappointed with Ubuntu recently as it worked 'right out of the box', without him having to fiddle with it..... what's the point of Linux if you done' have to dig into it to fix things and recompile the Kernal etc....
Cheers

Some of the updates for HH will require a reboot, I've had 2 so far.
I'm most impressed with the way Compiz manages windows and desktops. I'm one of those fools with a dozen windows open at any given time and being able to group, tab and move windows to other desktops means I spend a lot less time finding and switching open apps as I'm playing/working/messaging.
My one gripe is the sound system; occasionally ALSA will quit responding to requests from IM clients if I've been on youtube for instance (I hope I'm describing this correctly, I really have little idea what's going on inside linux as yet). This lasts for a couple minutes and then everything returns to normal.
OK, so I have a second gripe as well: Firefox 3 beta. Is anyone else unhappy with the behavior of page scaling and the address bar? The new address bar doesn't store what I've typed in, but acts more like a history panel. I don't want a history in my address bar drop-down. That's what the History function is for. As far as page scaling goes, ctrl-mousewheel also scales images and I'm not overly fond of that. It's a bit sluggish to begin with, compared to FF in Windows, and it gets even more so with scaling images in addition to text. It's not really a Hardy Heron issue, but they bundled the FF beta with the OS. I stripped it and installed the latest ver2.x release of FF and fixed that. Now if the folks at mozilla would fix FF scaling to the point of immediate response I'd be ecstatic; it's my most-used function (I must be getting old.... ).
