Look at the drawing I posted, you're going to put outriggers on the box and stake the outriggers to the ground, it won't sink, it's outrigger arms will be supported by the ground around the hole.

You need a name, try "Widow's Peek Observatory."

Karen's advice for your concrete is the best yet. I would not fill any part of the hole with concrete blocks. If you could actually fit 250 lbs of them in the hole, you would only save three bags of concrete mix. Not to mention all the trouble you would have trying to get your rebar into the hole. Plus the lack of adhesion between your new concrete and the old concrete blocks would not be good. Too many negatives to consider that. Hope all goes well for you at the hospital. Sounds like you have your hands way too full.

Thanks, Keith. We just got back from round one at the hospital and all is well. im so tired from the 4hr total drive that I cant do much today. Its suppose to rain again tommorrow, then nice and sunny til Tuesday so I can do my concrete hole like Karen said Saturday hopefully.

I'll second Carol's wishes, and hard headed that I am I'll once again try to save you some time and back brakeing labor hand mixing all that cement, but this is the last time.
Let's keep in mind this is a pier support piling for a back yard telescope, not the foundation for a new Dome of the Rock. There are no negatives with pre filling the hole with concrete block. It is the same material used in the hand mixed stuff you are about to use. It is just as strong, there are NO issues with inserting rebar.
You can listen to the nay-sayers if you wish, good luck with the pour. By the way, it a whole heck of a lot easier to load the hole with block than it is to mix and pour the equivalent amount of concrete by hand. I've built 7 foot high X 2 block square house piers with cement blocks laid up dry and filled with rebar and concrete. they are still standing after 30 years.
I added yet another layer of block to this before filling the hole with concrete.

Good labor saving idea Steve. I will add that this won't work in the Europe where their block are solid on one side. It would work for one layer though with the top (solid) side down.

Thanks alot, Carol. Things went so well, we dont have to go back tommorrow. Next stop is Tuesday for Josh's ear reconstruction surgery. He had an infection that destroyed one or two of the tiny little major bones that play such a crucial part in hearing. He has less than 40% hearing in that ear, and the last two times theyve went to fix it, they found more infection and had to remove that rather than repair what they could.
Its gruesome. Without going into detail, hes pretty much had his ear removed and laid acorss his cheek while they remove infection. Twenty something stitches inside and out to put it back, and then playing the waiting game to see if the infection has come back.
All looks well this time. He just had a CT scan and a major physical and for all they could tell without opening him back up, the infection is gone.
Im hoping they can give him some of his hearing back this time. it breaks my heart everytime he says 'whatd they say?' on TV when everyone else heard just fine.
Anyways...im bringing this thread down!
How bout some good news?!
I just got offered a pier with an 8" steel pipe that has a 12x12" base and a 10" round top base that stands at 36" for $190.00!
Im gonna take it! For the price, Id be a fool to turn it down, considering the same type piers I was looking at were about $600.00-800.00 somewhere, not counting shipping!
Schweet!

Talking about your children never brings the thread down, it just shows how much you love them!
Congratulations on the pier! Couldn't happen to a nicer couple. You both are working so hard to make your Observatory a reality, makes you most deserving for a little good luck.

Thanks alot, Carol. I appreciate the kind words from you and everybody. Kids can be so kool sometimes!
Thanks for that link, CnStarz. I must have missed that one. Its jam packed with information.
Steve, I guess I dont understand how your suggestion wont work. It sure looks alot easier on myback than all those bags of concrete. The way your pic looks, how could that not work?

Oh no ... not that thread ... reading it all will make anyone's head explode !
Seriously it has great information and some great concrete lessons ... you just need a couple of hours to get through it all.

I think that folks being referred to that thread should first be informed that it is not by any means a typical experience, though. Building a pier isn't nearly as difficult as that thread makes it appear and such projects generally go smoothly to a successful completion. It's more of a description of how badly things can go wrong on rare occasions.

John,
The one thing I kept thinking as I re read the thread was how much easier Peter's life would have been had he built a block type pier as you did. Then again he could have still had the dry concrete problem ... he just wouldn't have been able to see it.
I have to say I learned more about concrete from Peter's problems than from 10 threads where it all went right.

Sure, there's great info there. I just don't want folks to be frightened away from a pier project by thinking they'll have as many problems.
