Around here, I can get 18 or 20 footers at any of five or six places. The ONLY ones that do not carry lumber over 16 feet is Lowes and Home Depot. Edit: You should talk to a local home builder, and find out where he gets his lumber over 16 feet. I got some big 24's for my house. Someplace around there HAS to have long lumber, or they are not building anything much at all.
You are most fortunate! Long lumber is available here, thru special order only. So if one wants to pay more, & wait for who knows how long, it is technically available. Contractors "special order" their needs in advance, so they have it for the job.

I guess there is not a building boom there like there is here. Long lumber (over 16 foot) has always been available here as far back as I can remember. I think places where it's not available must be "low growth" areas where there is low demand for it. I could go today to any of several places and pick up some 20 foot 2x6's if I wanted. It may be partly because of the poultry house building industry around here too. Lowes and HD do not specialize in lumber. Most of our real lumber yards have many times the amount of lumber stock that Lowes and HD do. They are mostly located on rail sidings, and get flat car loads at a time.

Mornin, Yall.
Thanks, Matt and everyone else. Youre so right too. I havent even been near the telescope since this project started, I hope I still like it when the obs is done!
Several times now the wife has made comments like 'youd better find the next great comet after we go through this...', I like to tease her with 'Ive been thinking about giving this hobby up and trying crochet...' type comments.
Well, we got the majority of our wood roof on lastnight. We worked until we needed a flashlight to see then called it a night.
Since we had to have the roofing panels cut to 4'x4' to fit into the van, theres an awful lot of cutting and manipulating happening.
I also fogot to mention that when we drove to the next town to where the saw at Lowe's was actually working, the guy told us it was working but cutting about a half inch off.
They too were waiting on someone from Iowa to come fix it, the same as our local Lowe's. That half inch stopped us from lining up perfectly with a rafter here and there.
Quite a little headache.
We also found out yesterday (thank you, Diane!) that BYO uses metal roofing from a company called FABRAL and they dont have a dealer in this !*$%^ state. While looking around at HomeDepot I noticed they carried it though. Weird huh? Here it is.

With a nail gun in her hand, I'm quite sure you didn't make your wife do anything she didn't want to!
She is indeed, a jewel. It is so nice to see a family support one another, as you two do

She took this pic as proof that I am doing some of the work too after we joked about how all our pics show HER doing the work and me nowhere to be seen.

LMAO, thanks, Geoff!
I think after school were going to go to HomeDepot and get that Fabral roofing. They seems to have a selection so it cant hurt to go look. The weather channel says rain all weekend, so wed like to do as much as we can tonight to protect it.

Well, school is over and were off to look at the Fabral metal roofing. Im hoping the installation is pretty cut & dry. I guess well find out like everything else as we go.
BTW, its so nice to step in that obs with a partial roof on it now. its nice and shaded, cooler air in there, shelter from the sun....awesome!

Before you go any further, you might want to:
Stretch a taut string from the top of the gable on one end to the top of the gable on the other end, and see if there is any sag. One of your pics looks to show a lot of sag in the roof, but it could be an illusion. Better to fix it now before you put the felt and metal on.
