Mornin, Yall. We got our wood roof all put on lastnight. I was tired afterwards it was all I could do to eat and just crash on the couch.
John, We tried what you said lastnight and that sagging seems to be (to us) where boards dontline up perfectly due to bowing or something.
Those boards are all suppose to be 15/32 4'x8' pieces, but when you lie one beside the other they dont stick up the same, or one is totally thicker or smaller than the other.
Almost every other 2x6 we got was bowed in one way or the other, and when I complained about not being able to find a good piece I was told everyone that builds houses uses the same stuff-they just find a way to make it work.
Yall remember those pics I posted in this thread about the horrible wood I got? Everyone seemed to be saying thats just how it goes, so we did the best we could.
I dont know if its sagging or not, but it holds the wife & I up there just fine, and she aint about to let me tear it down and start over now.
Weve decided as long as it works for now, if and when theres a problem well call in a professional to fix it.
Yesterday I got 12 pieces of 3'x10' Fabral white metal roofing, 2 bags of weird little screws with rubber on them to hold the metal roofing down, a bag of another type of weird screw with bigger pieces of rubber on them for the black paper, and 2 10' lengths of ridge cap thingies to go right over the top where it all should meet.
I spent some time yesterday filling in every seam between the roofing wood with liquid nail adhesive for a little added protection against leaks and we also bought extra roofing wood panels to go around the length of the roller box thingie.
I think ive got everything I need right now, except for siding. we cant decide on if we should go with what the house has all around it, or that kewl looking fake wood siding.
Perhaps we should have done the siding first, but we wanted to protect the floor with a roof.
But its been raining all night too, off and on.
I also bought those big ole shears to cut the metal roof with, I wonder If I can just turn the circular saw blade around or something and cut it easier. Its gonna be awful trying to cut that metal roofing with the shears, I already know that much.

Cutting metal roofing... Lay it on the floor of the observatory. Mark the length along both sides and then scribe the cut line with a pencil. Start the cut with the shear. Place your foot on the side of the cut that wants to stay below the shear, and lift the other side up GENTLY away from the shear. It actually cuts quite easily once you get the hang of it. The trick is to keep the cut pieces pulled away from the shear with a small amount of tension.

You will do fine. DON'T use the circular saw unless it is fitted with the correct blade, even then it would still be hard work....

I just cut 6 sheets to fit my roof with a skill saw and metal cutting blade; looks like a thin grinding disk. It cut through the sheets easily. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND EARPLUGS.

Another thing to remember when cutting metal roofing with a saw is to sweep off the "dust" shortly afterward.
When these metal particles are exposed to moisture (even dew) they will begin to rust (and expand in size) and can imbed in the irregularities of the roof surface. This can take years off the roof's service life.

Hey Yall.
We put the remaining wood roofing over the front of the pyramid thingies, and got all the wood roofing finished.
We were putting a 6inch piece down the sides of our roller box to help our 2x12's not rub against the wall when we had to call it a night.
We went to bed early to try to finish it this weekened and woke up to rain.
The weather channel said rain all weekend the other day, then it became pretty all weekend with a chance of rain on friday, now its back to showers here and there all the way to monday. I wish I could be wrong 50-60% of the time and not be called out on it.
David, when I googled a picture of a skill saw it looks just like my Milwaukee circular saw. Is there a difference?
If its the same machine, then surely I could just go buy a metal blade.

The "Skil saw" in question is a name commonly used to describe a circular saw such as your Milwaukee or my Ryobi. The name comes from Skil being the manufacturer who popularized the circular saw. It's a bit like tissues being called Kleenex and photocopier machines being called Xerox regardless of actual brand.
Another nickname you may hear is "circ saw".

Yep...that be correct. Mine's a Black& Decker Skil saw and it's an oldie. Still works well.

Michael, cutting the metal is easy.
The panels I use had a ridge on both sides and I had to set the depth of cut deep enough to cut them. So thats one reason there's a 2x10 block under the panel to cut along.
You also need another block down the panel to support the weight so the piece doesn't bind when you cut it. You could use saw horses but you'll have more control on a flat surface.
When your done cutting, you'll have a very sharp burr on the edges. A flat mill *BLEEP* file will knock it down easily. I'd do this for safe handling.
It's looking great

LMAO, Karen! So thats what they call that thing!
Thanks for the help everyone. I would have posted yesterday but I was beat by the time we got back from HomeDepot.
The roof is finished, but im not thrilled. It doesnt line up perfectly like everyone elses roof Ive ever seen. The wife says im being picky, but a straight roof from South to North is all I wanted.
And where some of the wood we got is pathetic there does seem like a sag in the middle. John was right. We tried to find out why again and its just where the osb wood roofing is either bowed, or higher or lower than the piece beside it.
Its weird wed cut a 4'x8' piece in half put one piece down, come get the other and now they dont line up the same, or one side sits lower than the other. We even tried it in the garage where we know its flat and its just bizarre.
The roofing is complete though. We put our ridge caps on and just was able to get the side boards up that over lap the walls when it started raining.
Im kinda sad about the way its turned out though. The wife keeps reminding me Ive never operated a hammer let alone a drill or circular saw til this year and it could be much worse, but I wanted it to turn out *SOMEWHAT* like everyones here that looks so nice, tight, and professional.
When I told the wife I wasnt gonna post any pics out of shame she got ticked. Thats directly insulting her and I cant have that so I took some shots.
We were inside while it poured rain and theres no leaks! I just went and took these shots in the middle of the downpour and its still dry. Thats something I guess.
Dont laugh! I realize I could not build my way out of a wet paper bag but I think it will work. Down the road when something turns bad well have someone more qualified repair it.
We also just went and got a big ole box of siding, 4 corner pieces, 4 12' pieces of J-channel, and aluminum nails to put it all up.
Weve got the siding, door, and North and South board left! Oh, and the Eastern side of the angle iron to bolt down.

We ended up just using the shears to trim the metal roofing. It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.

It's weather tight, it opens and closes just fine, it's big enough for all your needs, and it's not going to fall down any time soon. So where's the problem?
Get some siding on it, clean up some of the details and stop looking for the things that you know aren't perfect. You're going to love using your observatory. Just don't point any of the things you think are issues to any visitors and pretty soon you'll forget them yourself.
Enjoy it, you've done something well that most folks who have no experience wouldn't even think about trying.
