Lol, Dean. You got me there! Perhaps after I beg and cry for my first imaging scope I can try it.
Im sorry, Carol. I totally forgot to add the item numbers earlier.
It is a garage door sweep. Its got pretty little ridges in it, and what looks like screw/nail areas ready in the other side.
I tried to link to it from Lowe's but they dont seem to recognize their own item numbers.
We bought two. Ones a 'PVC GAR Door Stop 9' thats the nine foot section of it-item number 73718, and 'PVC GAR Door Stop 7' thats the seven foot section and its item number 73717.
Thats exactly how its listed on the receipt, but good luck finding it on their website.
We found it right past the lumber, theres a big section of white stuff just like it, all sorts of the same stuff for different applications.
We got 2 nine foots and one seven foot, and cut the seven and butted the peices up against the nine foots, on each South and North wall. Works pretty good.
I hope that helps.

I am pretty sure that is a garage door sweep. You can find them in the millwork area (aisle 51) of Lowe's and in the aisle (aisle 4) that has all the door and window insulations. Yep, work for Lowe's.
I was going to ask...Either that or you spend WAY too much time in that store.

Michael,
I see you used the same kind of soft interlocking floor matting that I did, but you turned the gray side up and I turned the red, yellow, green, and blue up. It took five packs of eight to do most of our floor. Where did you find them? Ours came from Sam's Club. BTW, do you have any cost figures yet (if you care to share)? Our final cost came in at about $4,730 not including the tables, chairs, and a little spare lumber. That's about $18.47 per square foot.

Hi Michael,
I got a little behind reading your thread, but I had some time tonight finally and caught up I think. Your observatory looks terrific, I think! You are going to really enjoy it - the reduction in setup / teardown time, and the privacy and comfort of it are going to make you love this hobby even more.
Congratulations on a job well done. Other than cloudy nights, I think you needn't worry about sleep ever again!

Mornin, yall.
I was up late lastnight with my 'first use' of the observatory. Ill start another post detailing what happened.
John, I got those floor mats at Walmart. I bought the last three they had, and Ive got the black side up, gray side down, even though you can barely tell.
They were in the sporting goods section and they are in a pack with a treadmill machine on the front of it. They say they are for all sorts of different type flooring. I like them alot better than the wood, thats for sure.
And naw, I havent figured out a total cost yet, I kinda dont wanna know. Ya know? Ive got all the receipts, itll just take a little pouring over to get a number.
Thank you, Scott! And Everyone! Youre all invited-free Mt. Dew and Cheddar cheese Combos for all!

Ok...First light report. Forgive me, yall. Im trying to do this between math and history.
It was great! Its so dark in there, what a drastic change from sitting on the lit up deck!
I am up pretty high on the dob slab thats for sure, but thanks to the Catsperch pro chair, I easily adjusted the back and foot prop to accomodate.
I lined up with Polaris and I think since (thanks to the wife) im level, it was easier to find things than it was sitting on the wobbly non level deck.
I spent forever gazing at M3-a cluster. Its so pretty! I kept staring to the left and right of it and using my perephrial vision to see more, very cool.
I easily found: M3 M63 M51 M102 M64 ...then spent the rest of the time staring at Jupiter! I couldnt believe it-I just turned my scope to the brightest star up there out of curiosity and it was Jupiter! The only planet I have seen so far and could tell what it was was Saturn, but lastnight I saw Jupiter with three moons on one side, and one on the other. Yes!
It was about 28-35° ESE around 12:30 or so when I first found it and I couldnt stop trying to get closer and closer, but settled on the T5 9mm through the Televue 2x Big Barlow.
Scary thing though.
Im sitting there watching it wondering if those are moons around it, when I hear a low growl that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I froze! Again, a low growl like right beside me out the South wall. it sounded like the growl from 'Monster Quest'! As im sitting there thinking to myself 'arent I a big boy?' I shined my light out and found a big dog had found a way into the backyard and was growling at me! In my own backyard!
Aside from that everything was great, I hated to go back in but I knew I had school this morning.
I left my little drawing of what I thought was Jupiter and its moons on my wifes work stuff and called her to see if she saw my drawing as soon as I woke up.
Having my own observatory, after being on the deck, is like sitting in a cave thats dark and black. i actually have to use my red flashlight here, instead of on the deck where you could see everything thanks to the neighborhood light pollution.
A minor gripe is I guess where it got down to about 60°, the roof didnt close or open like it did in the middle of the hot day. I may have to open the South wall to shut the roof back which is a small price to pay in my opinion.
Also, since my dob is about a foot and a half up from the floor, I can see down to about 27° which is beyond what I would expect for good seeing conditions anyway. It may go lower but that far I know for sure, and thats off the west wall, not even using the fold down South wall.
Im very pleased! Today im going to work on removing that 9 tons of dirt we thought we needed so I can shut up the rest of the yard.
Also, the electrician came yesterday, looked at everything then called back about 6ish lastnight and said to put 4 outlets inside, 2 20amp fuses in their own box, a red light and a white light bulb thingie, and a motion detection light outside the door would be about $1,650!
What?! And an additional $250.00 if they needed to dig the ditch to run everything to it as well?! Remarkable!
Needless to say, I'll be using extension cords for some time if thats how its gonna be!
What a shock, I thought high end might be around $5-600.00.
That hurts, but the observatory did exacatly what I wanted it to.
So there ya go.

What a great first light from your new Observatory! After a couple of times, it will be difficult to remember what it used to be like observing; it's so nice just to walk in, roll roof off, start observing!
So glad you had such a great night; minus the growling dog of course!

Let's see...4 outlets, that's about $35 max including a GFCI outlet; small breaker box, about $25; two lights, about $15; Dimmer switch and box, about $15; wire and connectors, about $30. It could be wired well for about $120 maximum for inside materials and less than $100 for the connection to the house. IMO the contractor was preying on you because he figured you would not know better. I put in three outlets and four lights for less than $60. A #12 cord goes from the sleeping cabin to a plug on the back of the obs when in use, that way there is no way lightning can run in on the wire. Why don't you get a book on wiring and do it yourself?

Good Idea John. Either that or get all the materials you need, mount the boxes where you want them. Run all the wires to where they need to be and then call him back to do the hook ups. It should only cost you about 1 hour labor for him to do that. Glad you had a good first light with the new Observatory.

You would have to find the right electrician to just do the hook ups. The rip off guys would not touch it, they want to sell materials at incredibly inflated prices. Been there, seen that too many times to count. Maybe a guy specializing in small jobs would do the hook-ups, provided Michael did a very neat and workmanlike job on running the conductor. It's a "BLEEP" shoot out there. I will qualify this by saying that the bad ones are in the minority.

John, there are many quality electricians out there that will not "rip-off" their customer; what one has to do is shop around for pricing.

Thanks alot, yall. Im still looking for a good electrician.
Funny thing, about 2 months ago I passed a billboard at kroger that had a 'retired electrician looking for small jobs' sign posted. I tore it down and called him to see what it might be like to have someone run power to the obs when it was ready.
An old lady answered and sounded startled, and I said I must have the wrong number.
When I told the wife she said 'you big dummy!' that was probaly the guys wife-he is retired after all. Doh!
Now ive lost the guys number.
When I got the building permit its got a line on it that says any electric work must be done by a licensed electrician. Ill keep shopping around.
Maybe my neighbor has a friend of a friend. Ya know how that goes...
Now where can I find Messier and Caldwell posters and such to decorate?

Since Mike has one and his permit stipulates that his work be done by a licensed electrician it would be a shame to have all that work get "shut down" by a building inspector should one decide to slide by and check the place out. Not all areas require that permits be pulled for structures. Some requirements are based on size, use, location etc. I lucked out on mine because I made it less than 100 square feet and it's not considered a "habitable" structure. It was still built to code by a licensed contractor, if anything it's OVER BUILT since Scott and Donny from BYO did the work. While it may sometimes be a popular belief that it's OK to bend the rules to get what you want Mikes decision to play by them makes good sense. When it comes to electricity, wooden structures and a home with children DOING IT RIGHT is the right thing to do. Nothing would be more heartbreaking at this point than to cut some corners and have a problem later because of it. Hang in there Mike, it'll come together!
