Ok. Lyons Lumber is delivering 16 2x4x10' pieces, 34 2x4x12 pieces, and I think 12 4x8x7/16" osb pieces in about two hours for 323.34 which covers delivery and unloading.
Were going to butt the 2x4x10's against each other for our plate boards.
Oh yeah. Dont ask me how but when I went and measured just now weve gone from 15'6" length to 17'10 1/2"x 11'8 1/2".
It was 15'6"! Now after adding the floor its become 17'!
The guy at the lumber place said our plate board, the board the wall will sit on doesnt have to be one long ole 18' board, just cut two 10's or 12's and butt them together.
He also said wherever we have a gap in the top, to make the other top board that sits on top of that one cover the first boards gap.
That make any sense to yall? He explained it just right but Im butchering what he said.
With the price, a guy also comes to help us figure it all out and explain on site what he means.
Wow, im excited!
Now Im just waiting on the truck.

I would use the 16 footers for the long wall and 12 footers for th4e short wall
I'd build the walls laying flat on the floor then raise them up into position & brace them plumb and move on to the next wall.
By the time you get your observatory finished you could get a job as a carpenter...
Admit it...its fun !

If you build them flat (you should), you can build them in two pieces if they are too bulky for you and the better half. It would only require a double top plate to secure them.

Thanks, Yall. Sorry, Bob. Perhaps I should have used 16', but Im kinda stuck with shorter pieces now.
Man...my wood showed up.
I thought for $300.00 and dealing with a lumber company I would have gotten decent looking wood. This stuff should be used for firewood!
Im very dissapointed. The driver guy admitted that yeah it looks pretty bad here and there, but said something like they only have to have one good side 'cos youll hide the other side against the drywall. When i told him theres no drywall he said 'im just the driver'.
*sigh...
Anything I dont think I can use of course theyll replace (they said) but dang! I told him if at lowe's looking at lumber i would have thrown 50% of this stuff back.
Just pitiful.
He did say thats its 'grade2' or something like that that meant its not suppose to be the best. I didnt know. he said this type is used for studs in walls so I asume they know what they were doing.
I hope it doesnt matter and I just dont know enough about construction to say if its good wood or not.
On sight alone however...id use it to start fires, not build a house with.

I dont think the pictures capture all the beat up, non square ends, gaping holes, cracked and splintered areas.
Just sad.

Sorry to hear that the wood doesn't look very good.
Grading is based on load and splits/knots.
Grade 1 (Construction) rated for ~4500# Grade 2 (Standard) rated for ~3600#
Both will contain imperfections with grade 2 having more than grade one. Don't confuse this with finish select lumber grades (A, B, C...).
The only way to get around this is to hand pick them or personally know the person who does.

As long as it is straight and not twisted stuff it really doesn't look all that bad. When you've been in the business of carpentry as long as I have you'd have seen much worse. As you plod along you kind of end up cutting off bad parts and hiding other parts as you frame away. If your aware of your steps in building along the way when your done you will see very little of the "barked" edges and all....you really will! Good luck. Mike

And to define "Subfloor" for ya... The Subfloor is the decking (OSB) you put directly on the Joists... Typical construction has the Subfloor, underlayment, flooring. This would translate to OSB with Luan covering it, with your vinyl floor on top... Or even OSB (or plywood) with Padding, then carpet.

What Mikey and Blatterjr said. I've seen worse and still made it look right. Careful placement and a bit of trimming here and there will address most of what I see in your woodpile.
To minimize waste, I usually handpick my lumber. True, I'm retired and have the time to hit up the lumber yard or big box store when there aren't so many weekend woodworkers looking for material.
You're gonna do just fine. Be brave. Be optimistic.

Hey, Yall!
We started at about noon after a trip to Lowe's to replace some of the wood and got all our walls done!
Were only lacking one top board on the west side, and the smaller top side of the south fold down wall.
We got our door today, hinges, and worked until it was too dark to make anymore cuts!
Were very tired now. And covered in sawdust, but the walls are up!
Tommorrow we put the osb up, and possibly attach the door!
Smokin'!

Nice job Michael. Lumber is lumber and sometimes some boards are straight. Looks like you got it figured out. Pick the straight ones for wall plates toss the really bogus ones aside for when you need blocks or short pieces and cut the rest for studs. Piece of cake!
