I'm playing around with my 12.5" f/6 truss dob design some more. I was thinking of standard 8-truss with orthoganal mirror box but .... I'm less satisfied with that. I'd like to do something different. Anybody got "funky" designs they'd liek to post pics of? Looking for inspiration, not to copy.
Thanks, Rob

My 12.5" f/6.3 came out kind of funky - the whole hexagonal idea flowed naturally from attaching the mirror cell's three mounting bolts directly to the lower truss poles. The split tube is handy for getting in and out of the house - one bulky but light unit, the other heavy but small. Total OTA weight is 40 lbs. I very loosely applied R.F. Royce's web-published design (but left off the rotating head to save weight).
If this helps inspire your own ideas, great, but take its lessons too. Few would want to copy this newt-on-a-GEM that's way too big for the LXD-75 that it sits on (although the OTA is very sturdy). This thing could be dob-mounted without any more surgery than attaching bearing rings to either side of the center box. Wobbles and ladder-climbing aside, it has been a pleasure on both deep-space and planets. So I think you chose a great spec. Good luck on your own version.
Please bear with me as I don't have a web site to channel the pictures through. Hopefully it comes through in an attachment.

Rob,
I just finished a 12.5" f/6 Dob, 6 pole carbon fiber truss and carbon fiber light shield. This weekend I should be able to get some photos and post on this forum.

Jay,
DEFINITELY. It still looks like a Luxo lamp to me. That is such an organic design--it looks so friendly. Kinda like an oversized robot puppy, always delighted to see you.

Kinda of a "How NOT to do it" with a couple neat options. Notice the large wheels and post hole digger handles. Makes for very easy yard travel and the handle let me rotate the scope easier.
The base is standard fair from Astro-System plans about 15-20 years ago. And way too heavy. Works though.

Yeah, notice that if you run over the dog with it, you can cause some real damage!
