Thanks Mr. Bill, I'm using the locking nut that Orion provided, nylon at the inside top of the hex nut. Is that an aircraft nut?

Wes, thanks for your tip. I'll check to see if this can be done.

Is there any way you can double-nut it? In other words, get it to the tension you want, then holding that nut with a wrench, snug another one up against it? "Double-nutting" is a very effective way of locking a nut into position.

Wes
BTW... Mr. Bill- your mountains are beautiful...

IF you can find nuts thin enough to use with existing bolt length (or replace with longer bolt)...double nutting would be MY choice. Aircraft nuts will back off with enough torque...but that's what the Teflon does in moderating the break-away stiction.

Just need to play with it and figure out the solution that works best for you. Lots of ways to "skin the cat."

Mountains are interesting....leftmost peak is Thompson, the last in the Sierra range. Everything to the right is the beginning of the Cascades. My property is unique as the ridge I sit on is the "official" beginning of the Great Basin to the north and east.

Yes...you want to add a washer to increase surface area and than a piece of Teflon between the washer and the mount block.

Tom,

Mine has a locking nut. It sounds like maybe your's either didn't have the right one used or someone changed it at some time to a non-locking one....Or it is just worn out.

Aircraft nuts will "wear out" after being tightened/untightened several times.....

Wow!

So many shapes and sizes to choose from. What would you (Mr. Bill) recommend?

Thanks a lot for the very useful feedback Bill Like what you did with the re-drilling of the P-Mount block.....I'll either do this or get the Orion flat adapter accessory,as you say, many ways out there "to skin the cat"!!

I will take a leaf out of your book and put that copper washer between the L-Bracket and bino,+ buy some Teflon for use on the Altitude axis + Tripod Head area.....so thanks for the great advice there

On a final note Bill, that's one piece of absolutely GORGEOUS looking real-estate you have there, you must be one proud, little happy-camper
Light pollution eh!!....Ha,Ha..WHAT LIGHT POLLUTION??
It looks like serenity and nature personified,..a true Astronomers paradise...not to mention a healthy oudoor environment for hiking/bicycling etc.. If you're ever in the mood to sell 0.5-1 acre from your fine spread to put a sparkle in your bank balance and subsequently have an "Astronomy-kindered-spirit" occasionally living in the area, drop me a PM

ALL THE BEST,

DAVID
