Hi Malcolm,
glad you posted here also - welcome to us Lunatics section!

Those pics of yours are delightful to look at.

I especially liked that Vallis Rheita depicted in you catch. The surface of the Moon is overall most natural, and you pic presents detailed exposure on that wonderful Vallis. What a feature it is!

And - of course - I liked that large scale shot of the Mare Nectaris region very much. That Theophilus central mountain - rising up to 1400 meters - looks absolutely fantastic in you pic!

The basin of the Mare is also spookysmooth - and that raylike formation coming from Rosse is spectacularly depicted in your pic!

That ray formation is quite amazing to look at live, and very hard to catch on film. Attached you can find this pic (a single shot) taken by me on Rosse surroundings on the 10th of May at 22:12 UT (with tiny SkyWatcher 150 Pro Maksutov-Cassegrain and afocally by a Sony DSC-H3 digital pocket camera).

Thanks for sharing your pics with us - please, send more as you get them!

Be well!

Welcome to the Lunie Bin and a great start - I really like the way you captured Mare Australe on the Rheita image.

Malcolm,
You have fine some fine photos of the moon. Very welldone. I would also like to point out that the Moon was close to the Earth and a favorable E/W Libration of +6.58 degrees to view and image Vallis Rheita.
Also favorable were Mare Marginis and Mare Smythii. Did anyone get a view of these? I did not know of the good placement until I looked at the Moon's limb in the telescope on the evening of May 11, 2008 UT. The near circular outline of Mare Crisium was my first indication of a good eastern libration. I shall add a photo of them later.

And here is the photo of Mare Marginis and Mare Smythii. I used a Nikon Coolpix 995 digital camera and Scopetronixs 40 mm eyepiece for this afocal projection on the 23.14cm f/15 A. Clark Refractor. Six images were combined using Registax v 4.0. May 11, 2008 03:09 UT

Hi Sabia!

That is a very impressive Moon! The surroundings you shot is hard to catch as well balanced as you have managed.

Should you like a bit to improve the pic, you could add a little unsharp mask plus adjust a bit the brightness and contrast.

In that way you will get perhaps a little more craterlets visible and enhance the presence of the small lava formations.

Be well - and thanks for sharing this with us!

That's a very good view of Vallis Rheita. And off to the left, in Janssen, the major rille shows up quite clearly. Lot of good geological detail in that first shot.

Brightness and contrast did improve the photo, could not take much of an unsharp mask. Thanks Timo
