The Curator (Dave) and Assistant Curator (Charlotte) of our local planetarium put on a star party last night…with our family being the only other participants!
It must really be depressing to tote (2) 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrains and associated gear to a local park to be largely greeted only by silence! Dave is an old hand at this, however, and outwardly appeared unfazed. As he stated, it would help if their advertising budget were something greater than zero.
We arrived quite early, nearly the same time they did, and so tried to put ourselves to use by helping carry gear around and doing whatever we could. I was granted permission to set-up our tripod-mounted 70mm bins. It was our first star party, and we wanted to make sure to represent & accommodate the folks who favor Kenny Jones’ adage “Two eyes and a preference to use both”. As darkness rose up, my kids spotted some Roseate Spoonbills, Nighthawks, and a weather balloon nearly at the zenith. Dave estimated it at Mag –4. The parking area remained empty, save for our and their vehicles.
A cloudy western horizon knocked out any chance at Mercury, which we enjoyed earlier in the week. Overhead, more clouds quickly rolled in, although not before we got a glimpse of Saturn. Although the drive for Dave’s Meade was acting up, we did catch it zip through the field at two-hundred-something-X. The kids, as expected, were amazed. EdZ’s byline came to mind. I tried to steer the kids to M44, although conversing with serious astro people was making me light-headed.
Still no other people showed up. My kids elicited a grin from Dave when they pointed up and pronounced “Follow the arc to Arcturus and speed on to Spica”. I’m glad it did, for they heard it from both Dave and Charlotte on our several trips to the planetarium. The kids let this fact be known.
I guess I need to crawl out from under my rock more often. I was electrified when Dave said “Nu Draconis”, for it was the first time I heard that name pronounced by another human being. That, along with hearing other various other astro phrases, had me absolutely giddy. Here I was absorbing whatever I could from the two curators, all the while trying to contain my excitement and trying not to blabber too much about what little I know. My Wife later said I did a decent job of it, although by that time the drool on my shirt had dried.
Full overcast brought a teardown and a return lug of all the heavy gear to their van. We left in a sad, yet quite buoyant mood. Sad for the lack of participation after seeing how much work is involved, yet bouncing off the walls of the car from having a “private audience” with the Curators!
Honestly, the big SC’s were nice, but I only need 40-50mm of aperture to much enjoy the night sky. The presence of kindred yet far more learned spirits, however, is irreplaceable!

Too bad, but sounds like you and family had one heck of a party, all to yourselves! I bet Dave and Charlotte don't feel they wasted their time...they had appreciative participants.

Glad you had a good time. Where i live we dont have that many star parties at all. Its a shame more folks didnt show up. Maybe they knew it was going to be cloudy? Even with a bad weather report id still show up just to look at other folks stuff.

The universe is a big and mostly empty place. It is fitting that loving it is a lonesome deal. The amateur astronomers I know all do images with go-to SCTs, nothing wrong with that, but I am more into a sensory thing. I have never heard "Nu Draconis" pronounced out loud. I have never met a human being who gave a flip about double stars, or cared a hoot about binoculars. That is why I love CN and Astromart too. This web technology connects a few like minded souls, as weird and distant apart as we may be.
I recently visited 30deg N, and saw nighthawks. Here, at 36deg in New Mexico, I am still waiting. Ron

Neal ,
I felt moved to see my name mentioned in such a touching report .
I gave up caring about numbers ( or lack of ) in attendance at such events , ages ago .
For six consecutive years now , I've been the only one to attend the Northern England and North Wales Annual Sheep Counting through Binoculars Contest -- the upside being that I've won it every time ! :-)

Very touching post. I too have never heard Nu Draconis spoken out loud and don't expect i ever will as astronomy is for me a solitary activity.

Absolutely spot on!

I'm sure you're also the organizer of that contest and no one's invited

I work a lot of public outreach star programs. Yeah, it's a lot of work, but it's also a labor of love; it's what we do.
And I'll tell you, I sure don't measure success in total attendance!
Sometimes we have big crowds, sometimes tiny ones. Occasionally, nobody (usually on a mostly cloudy night, for a "rain or clear" event, so we feel obliged to show up if it's possible that anybody else will....)
I have worked events that were, apparently, attended by a couple hundred morons, with no attention span, self-control, or interest in astronomy (and I'm talking about the PARENTS here! ), and then I'll have contact with one kid who is interested, who hangs around, who gets it , and all of audden the whole thing is worthwhile!
Other times, I've had just one family show up, but their great interest and enthusiasm let me know that I was doing a good thing.
So, here's my measure for a program's success: If you know you've really reached ONE person!
So don't be at all sad about your "solo star party". I'm guessing that you and your family absolutely made it all worthwhile for the planetarium people who were on duty.
Cheers,
Jim

I've never been able to work out why North Americans tend to say " COULD care less " when by implication , what they mean to say is " COULDN'T care less " ! ?
For example , in jrw's sentence above , surely it would make more sense to say " It's better to have a FEW who are enthusiastic , than MANY who could NOT care less .
To say that these people COULD care less , is to suggest that they DO actually care , albeit not necessarily as much as one would prefer , but more than if they didn't care at all .

110% correct Kenny, My father always said the exact same as you: It IS "One could NOT care less".
P.S. Dont feel bad about you being the only one to your sheep counting bino party.
Im the only one that shows up for the (my) daily or weekly "airline" viewing bino party....

Thanks very much for the kind words and encouragement folks! I always learn something here. Dave responded to a thank you note I sent last night, and in it indicates that he too had fun.
Kenny, with as much time that I've spent reading here at CN over the last year-and-a-half or so, it is quite difficult to NOT think of someone here when we're observing!

Hi Kenny,
We all don't say it that way. I know, because I am a grammar freak in my spare time, although I will sometimes create a typo. I just have to respond to your post.
I think that we are beginning to loose our language a bit (a lot?) here in North America.
I hear so much *BLEEP* on TV--EVEN CNN now. I always correct them out loud, even if I happen to be alone in the room. Perhaps I am simply trying to keep in touch with, and reinforce, the proper way of speaking--even though there are a number of "correct" variations. I am quite happy that I learned what I did WHEN I did.
You certainly have struck a cord with me, irregardless--don't get me started on that one.
Best regards, Dave.

"You certainly have struck a cord with me, irregardless--don't get me started on that one."
Btw, Dave, irregardless is a nonstandard double negative of the proper regardless . ;^)
Just pokin' fun; isn't English great?
