Here are a couple of my latest acquisitions.
The first is a neat one, my first "main mass." It is NWA 5057, a provisional number given to this 139g H5 chondrite. As a provisional, it could turn out to be paired with something else once the naming committee formally votes on it. But it's a neat thought at the moment. Only 340g of this are known. From the Michael Cottingham collection, his photos, used with permission.

Next up is Sahara 02500, a 32g end slice of this L3 chondrite. Just a pretty stone. I love the texture and patterns in chondrites!

And the last one, a 2+g part slice of the Sacramento Wash 002 H4 chondrite from Arizona. Again, just a pretty pattern. I need to break my stereo microscope out of storage one of these days to really dive in deep on the chondrules here. Till then, a hand lens will have to do.

Nice additions Steve. I had my eye on that NWA5057 as well. I liked the fact it's a main mass & it was a pretty cool shape/size. Awesome pickup & i'm glad a member now owns it. Kudos

Todd, sorry to beat you out on the sample. Mike C. does put some nice stuff out, no?.
Todd C., Those give-aways are a great idea. I took some meteorites to an outreach session a few weeks back. One youngster in particular seemed really interested in science, space, full of questions in general. You should have ssen his eyes light up when I gave him a small unclassified NWA fragment to take home. You'd have thunk it was the moon the way he held on to it!
Clear skies.

Steve,
If you are doing outreach work, send me a PM. I'll send you some freebie meteorites to hand out to the kids. That's an investment for all of us that is well worth the small expense. . It's good work, and a lot of people here on CN do it. It's one the things that makes this place special.
Regards,
MikeG
PS - Todd, I'll send you a few more freebies if you have some promising young future astronomers waiting for them.

No worries Steve, i shoulda pulled the trigger instead of sleeping on it.
Mike, that'd be great. Being a new member at the observatory, you're expected to participate with outreach & public programs. While i'm not a guru when it comes to the astronomy aspect like the other club member's, i've considered meteoritics as a topic i may excel at & could use as a segway to other parts of astronomy as well. Thank's in advance!

Mike,
Thanks for the offer on the freebies but I'm set for the moment. I have a fair bit of a bulk NWA lot I purchased a while back and about 3/4 kilo of it was fragments in the 2-4 gram range. They're great as give aways. So if you have someone else who can use them, lets share the wealth (or is that spread the disease?).
Clear skies.

Over the past few years I have built up and then sold off a couple of meteorite collections - selling them because of the need to raise funds for astro equipment.
Having now got a couple of nice scopes and a set of decent eyepieces I have decided to build a small meteorite collection again - this time for keeps !.
Currently my inventory is:
Stones
Gao-Guenie: Chondrite H5. Endcut, 8.05 grams.
NWA 869: Chondite L4-6. Endcut, 35.48 grams.
NWA 032: Lunar Mare Basalt. Cut fragment, 39 milligrams.
NWA 1068: Martian Shergottite Basalt. Fragment with cut face, 140 milligrams.
Holbrook: Chondrite L/LL6. Fragment, 1.16 grams.
Barwell: Chondrite L6. Fragment, 0.507 grams.
Allende: Carbonaceous Chondrite, CV3. Full slice, 3.183 grams.
Irons
Canyon Diablo: Octahedrite, coarse, type IAB.Fragment,17.5 grams.
Campo del Cielo: Octahedrite, coarse, type IAB. Fragment, 15 grams.
Sikhote-Alin: Octahedrite, coarse, type IIAB. Individual, 25.65 grams.
Gibeon: Octahedrite, fine, type IVA. Cut and etched piece, 21.3 grams.
Chinga: Ataxite, type IVB (anomalous). Polished whole slice, 25.6 grams.
Taza / NWA 859: Octahedrite, Plessitic, Ungrouped. Individual with orientation features, 3.7 grams.
Stony Irons
Vaca Muerta: Mesosiderite, type 1A. Endcut, 15.3grams
Thats it at the moment but I've got plenty of gaps to fill when my budget allows - A stable (in the UK climate) Pallasite, a nice Tatahouine fragement, some Rumuruttite, Tagish Lake ..... the list goes on and on .....!!!
It's a VERY addictive hobby I find
I'll try and post some pictures but my digital camera is not great at macro.

Hi John, Glad to hear you're re-addicted again I'm a newbie to the hobby myself as i'm trying to amass a collection as best as possible all while readig more & more about the topic to better understand what i'm actually acquiring. It's pretty mind numbing once you know how old & where from some of these little "pebbles" are. Looking forward to your pics & posts.

Well I have finally decided to purchase a few larger stones,to add to my ever-growing micromount collection.
This is the first of the 3 large(over 100 gram) Canyon Diablo Pieces I have purchased.
I also ordered a few stands and easels from MICA,as well as Labels from MeteoriteLabels.com.

I've been looking for a while now for a really nice etched iron. Tonight was the night...
This 151 gram slice of Muonionalusta is classified as a fine (IVA) Octahedrite and has a spectacular Widmanstatten etch pattern. Muonionalusta is only rarely found on the meteorite market as most specimens have been locked up in museum collections, with very little in private hands. Kiruna, Sweden, where the Muonionalusta meteorite was found, is located 200 miles North of the Arctic Circle and is not the easiest place to go, but I lived in Sweden in 1981 and flew to Kiruna while I was there... beautiful place (in the Summer. )
The 800,000 year old terrestrial age of this meteorite means it must have undergone a complex glacial transport history before its discovery. No obvious crater could be identified since Sweden (especially its northern parts) has been repeatedly glaciated during the last one million years. It was discovered by a stone crusher when his machine became jammed by a piece of "soft iron". Eventually two pieces of "iron" were encountered and fortunately one was secured before it passed through the crusher.
