Very nice review, Scott ... it really is a beautiful scope and the fact that you had more pros than cons tells me you liked it a lot! Thanks for the report sir.

Hi Scott.
My BIG telescope is only 80mm too.
Its still amazing what they allow you to see though.

I really like those mounts.

Great review and pics.

Thanks everyone.
I wish I had added more about the new multi reticle RDF.
It is an all metal version (quite heavy) and has 3 settings for different displays. It also has variable intensity, but unlike the other SV RDF's in my stable, it has multiple click stop settings instead of the potentiometer effect of the originals.

The SV80ED is a fun little scope and it gives a clean enough view that I don't see myself having to upgrade in the future in the 80mm class of scopes. It meets my needs well.

If I was heavily into imaging I might spring for a triplet with a field flattener, but I am just a visual geek and the SV80ED seems suited towards that environment.

Scott, I enjoyed your review and your honest user perspectives on the hardware and visual impressions. I'll look forward to more from you. Nice job.

Thanks Bob.
I have a review of the original Nighthawk (the AT1010N) coming out as soon as the powers that be check it for errors.

Thanks Scott for the excellent review. I've had my NHNG for over a year now and my experience with the scope very much mirrors your review.

Great little performer !

Hi Scott,

IMO you did a really nice job reporting your shakedown of the Stellervue NHNG. It inluded a good and thorough evaluation of the optics and your observing tests for chromatic aberration.

On a personal note, two years ago I was looking to replace my achro which came with problems (widely published) and was looking long and hard at the NHNG. I got to the point of sending an e-mail inquiry to Vic Maris (which he quickly and graciously answered). But with a lot of help I was able to get my achro improved so I backed off from this scope.

It's a nice telescope and you wrote a really nice review of it IMHO FWIW.

Take care,

Oh, BTW, you thought that dew shield could have been longer. In proportion to the OTA diameter, it appears longer than that for my achro. You must be used to those super long dew shields for the NH Classics. I thought that with that dew shield the NH Classic looked way cool.

Thanks Phil.

Mark I owned 3 SV scopes before the SV80ED and all 3 had the longer style of dewshield (my 2 Nighthawk AT1010N's and my SV102V). I think the aesthetics of those scopes are top notch.

The dewshield on the SV80ED never allowed dewing for the couple of months I tested it so it must work just fine, I just like a looooooong dewshield.

What a well written review Scott. I don't comment often on reviews but when I see a good one, I have to chime in. This is one that both newbies and old timers to the hobby can appreciate. EXCELLENT!

Thanks Echan. My reviews will be of the less technical, more "seat of the pants" variety.

Meat and potatoes style.

I will eventually have it Zygo'ed.
Until then I will reserve judgement.

I will be sending a handful of scopes to Astronomics for the Zygo treatment.

I'm pretty happy with my SV80ED. I had it out with the TV85 and was surprised that if anything, it had less CA than the TV85. The SV80 is lighter but I think the TV85 is more aesthetically pleasing to look at.

I haven't run it side by side with any 80mm apos so I can't comment on its performance vs. the TV scopes or the SV80S triplet.
I hope to do so in the future to see how it stands up (but I have a good idea how those comparrisons would turn out).

This is a good little scope and should provide years of happiness, but it is just shy of apo level performance as far as color correction is concerned.

Thanks Clinton,

I seriously doubt that.

Tom has the review thing down to a science.
I'm just poking in the dark.
