Sky Scout and metal new
      #2370248 - 05/04/08 07:13 AM

Okay I'd like to get one of these and was wondering just how close to metal as in STEEL or IRON or even Aluminum can these get before they get interfered with due to the metal?
Inches or feet.
I seen one of these protector shields being made for it or is this just hopefull wishing it will work?

I do not know exact requirements, but I believe you should avoid operating the SkyScout (or the MySky) close to large masses of metals bearing magnetic properties. I don't think Aluminium is a big deal though (apart from maybe shielding the built-in GPS antenna).

The best way of checking this is by borrowing someone's SkyScout and seeing how it behaves in your setting.

Manny,

I've had a sizeable chunk of aluminum sitting right on my SkyScout before, and it seemingly it had no effect on performance (it was a laser pointer bracket that I had custom made to fit the SS).

I use my SkyScout frequently to identify alignment stars when I'm setting up my goto mount/scope in remote locations. Typically I'll have my gear piled up on some tables (with steel legs) and some vehicles within 50 or fifty feet of my scope. Within maybe 10 or 15 feet of the tables I occasionally get a message that I'm too close to metal objects. As long as I stay about 30 or 40 feet away from a vehicle it seems to work fine as well. These are all rough estimates.

For my purpose (identifying my alignment stars) I couldn't be happier with the performance of my SkyScout. Yeah, it cost a lot more than my planisphere, but my setup time has decreased dramatically.

I'm interested in both Sky Scout and MySky too and like you, I wanna mount it to a scope.

I've only heard warnings not to attach these gps's onto a scope - but no one has any pics or input of actual experience with mounting these gps's onto a scope....SOOO...i blew all my money on a DSLR, but...check out magnetic shielding...that's what I'm gonna do.

I only have a few magnetic steel screws on my LX5, the rest is aluminum until you get to the mount legs...I'm gonna try this magnetic shielding...if i ever save up money...got that Atlas I'm hankering for.

The only problem I get is from the power wires above. Usually get an interference message, but you justhit the button and its good to go.

Try www.astronomy-shoppe.com . They have a kit to mount the skyscout. According to their information, they are working on a shield so the SkyScout will work on metal scopes, ie. Dobs.

That is the device I mentioned earlier but it is still in the works.
There is no one any where near here that has one to borrow to test with.
Oh well, I will still make it and see how it goes.
