Morning at Crater Walther new
      #2393611 - 05/13/08 11:04 PM Attachment (33 downloads)

On this spring evening I drove over to our local community college to pick up and bring home the observatory telescope which was in need of cleaning and minor repairs. When I finished that work the sky was clear so I decided to use the scope to make a lunar sketch. The target I selected for drawing was the large (140 km.) Nectarian period walled plain crater Walther. On older lunar atlases this crater is either labeled Walter or Valtherus but in 1982 the name was changed to the current Walther by the IAU. I have always found the moon shows off some of its best large craters at this time in the lunation. Walther is one of those great old highland craters with much to offer a careful observer. Most seasoned lunar observers are well aware of the Walther sunset ray, but even at sunrise this crater has its rewards. A combination of craters with a common dark floor rests on the eastern rim three kilometers above the shadowed floor of Walther. To the west beyond the dark floor is the cratered, off-centered “central” mountain group casting a long triangular shadow across the resurfaced floor to crater Walter E (13 km.). Four small 4-6 km. craterlets can be seen in the drawing although at the eyepiece additional smaller ones were clearly visible in moments of steady seeing. To the northeast of Walther another large 3.9 billion year old crater Aliacensis (80 km.) was showing terraced walls and a central peak. The large younger Eratosthenian crater to the north of Walther is Werner (71 km.). Like the other two it has an off-centered central peak as well.
This was one of those observing nights when you wish time would stand still. I watched the long triangular shadow from Walther’s central peak shorten by 40% in just 2 hours.
I must say this was a beautiful night for moon viewing.

Sketching:

For this sketch I used: black Strathmore 400 Artagain paper, 9”x 12”, white and black Conte’pastel pencils and a blending stump. Brightness was slightly decreased (-2) and contrast increased (+2) after scanning using Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Telescope: 13.1 inch f/ 6 Dobsonian and 6mm eyepiece 333x

Frank,

A beautiful and accurate observation of Walther and environs. You have captured this region of the Moon perfectly. The long, triangular shadow of the mountain group over Walther is interesting. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Frank, that's just plain outstanding. I just love it. Frame it....or I will for you. If I was not so busy getting ready to run to Haiti, this sketch would entice me to stay up all night and try it. Roland

Frank, that literally took my breath away for a moment. I'd have to venture to say that is probably my favorite sketch that you've done so far. You've always been a great observer and sketcher, but it's obvious that you continue to refine your techniques with each session. It's very inspirational.

Carlos, Roland, Mark, Erika and Eric,

Thank you all for your kind words on my crater drawing.
Sometimes I really get the business for using 13-18 inch scopes on the moon. When the seeing is good it is remarkable how much detail one can see. Erika when the sun is in the sky you can do solar H alpha and white light sketching and in the dark of the night at new moon you can draw deep sky targets and when old luna is in the sky you can do shallow sky targets. So did you know there are times when you can sketch non-stop around the clock! Free time is a myth. Thanks again.

Frank

Yes, I did indeed know that and have on occasion done combinations of solar and one or more of the following: planetary, DSO, lunar in one 24 hour period.

Needless to say, I can't do that very often, even if I wanted to. And especially can't if I decide to make reports with them. That's pretty much why I do mainly just solar now. I still love night time viewing, but given the choice sleep wise, it has to be solar.

My dear Frank!!!!

What an outstanding view of the moon, wow!
This sketch is so beautiful! I feel like I want to touch my screen, as if I can feel the moon's surface in your sketch!

Excellent piece of art, Frank!

Rony,

Thank you very much for your kind remarks. Just remember, you are one of many that has set the bar very high for artistic quality and realistic eyepiece views. We are all in awe of your renderings.

Dee,

Thank you so much for your comments. Sketching at the terminator does present problems with changes in lighting as you well know. I stopped a few times to scan my progress. It was a beautiful night to observe and sketch.

Wow, Frank--you're really getting good with the Conte' technique. The detail and three dimensionality of your drawing are outstanding! I enjoyed your notes, too.

Thanks, Frank. It's been a combination of too busy times and cloudy weather day after day. It's normally cloudy 2 out of 3 days here anyway, but it's been closer to 9 out of 10 days since January. And those rare clear days never seem to come at the right time, either. We're in another stretch of cloudy weather again now after that one clear day May 13th.

THAT, my friend, is absolutely gorgeous! The realism you impart in your Lunar sketches is just breathtaking, and you also manage to convey the solitude and "loney" feel of the Lunar surface to prefection.

A most excellent sketch ondeed!!!!

Wade and Les,

Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. The sketching gets easier as the weather improves.
