I attented the Tokyo Bird Festival today and had my first looksee through boths pairs of Duovids. Wow! Excellent ergonomics! I could hold the 10/15x50 rock steady even at 15x. Being able to switch between high and low powers was just sooo cool too. Too bad they cost $3k!
Also had a chance to check out the Kowa Genesis. Another nice bino. Hoped to see the new Nikon EDG Series but there were none to be seen and the Nikon reps knew nothing about them!

Hi Rick, That is strange about the Nikon reps not knowing anything. My "American Hunter" magazine reviewed the 10x42 EDG binocular. I posted this on Cloudy Days a while back. http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2276519/page/1/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1
I don't have that issue right now my future Son-in-Law has it right now.

Yeah, the EDG seems to be a North American product only. There was never a press release in Japan, not in the March 08 Japan catalog nor is it shown on their global website.

It is too bad there isn't a way to have the "soom" feature of the Duovid and have a wider field of view at the low end of its power range. The Duovid's field of view at 8x is quite a bit smaller than the fixed power 8x Ultravid.

Maybe you guys could answer a question about the Duovid. Did it get upgraded when the Trinovid was superceded by the Ultravid (lighter weight, dielectric on the diagonal, hydrophobic coatings) or is it still Trinovid BA era? Ron

Hi Ron,
I don't know if the current Duovids are lighter / different than the first Duovids. I would think the current Duovids would have the same features as the Ultravids.

I was just happy to finally get my mits on a pair. None the bino stores here stock them though they can be ordered. I really like the concept and didn't think the FOV was unusually small at either mag setting. I think if I was going to spend the $$$ for a Euro bino this might be the one I'd get.
I was also hoping Zeiss might be at the event so I could see how their Fluorite bins compare to the Kowa Genesis but Zeiss was a no-show. Actually, the event was kind of "weak" gear-wise with only a handfull of OEMs showing product and no dealers to buy from.
Did spend some time comparing my Nikon 8x30 EII with the comparable Premier and SE. Other than ergonomics and a better focuser, I saw no optical advantage over the EII and the SE did not impress. I am now even more happy I was finally able to get used EII a few weeks ago!

Maybe someone will come out with a lower priced clone 15x roof with the same ergonomics and it would make IS binoculars obsolete.

Like "Dolly" the sheep, I'm afraid it would also die an early death. Clones don't seem to have a very good life expectancy.
