Mighty ETX-70 'sees' deepest yet new
      #2365944 - 05/02/08 06:23 AM Attachment (64 downloads)

Clear last night after a week of rain so targetted some distant Abell Galaxy Clusters in Leo and finally Cor Bor and the impossible AGC 2065 at 1.5BLY range

Didn't expect much as the tiny galaxies therein in the mag 15 -17.5 and fainter range but the Mighty piggybacked ETX-70 did it again Took two 10min exposures [in 20s subs] and even abandoned scope during exposures to watch TV indoors - here's small but enlarged crop from the 20m exp stacked frames revealing about 20 feeble galaxies.

I've used Megastar and Alvin Huey's post in the CN DSO furum from last July to identify the galaxies and there may be more

well done nytecam
you must have some very dark skies where you live. I would have thought London was fairly light polluted.

Hardly OD - my skies are aweful but last night was better than usual eg mag 4 stars just visible to the eye at fair altitude and I could make out the outline of Leo for example. However this proves the common misnomer where the brain is overruled by the eye in selecting good skies whilst the cam, without prejudice, can see much deeper under almost any conditions. So it's keep eating the carrots or get out the cam

The group you've identified as PGC 54881/3 almost looks like 4 or 5 blobs, do you think there's a gravitational lens effect going on there?

I found Andreas Domenico's site and it identifys PGC 54880 in that group ... web page

Maurice, the Starlight cam, and ETX optics are an amazing combination; Onward to pillage.

Hi Matt - don't think you should read too much into my 2065 pic - it's an enlargement from a tiny part of the full frame [below] and pushing the ETX+SX CCD combo to the limit but in the 'deep' 20min exposure does record galaxies much fainter than before. Yes - thanks for the URL which I'd found via Google whilst looking for a 2065 reference - prefering for now Alvin Huey's post on CN DSO forum and Megastar. Your continued interest is greatly appreciated

Thanks Matt - you have identified PGC 54880 on my image and I'll update the pic sometime - the fourth easterly [left] 'blob' within the circled area is probably an artefact of the camera. Thanks again for your efforts

I've started to look at the other Abell clusters shot that night through the ETX-70 eg AGC 1185, 1213, 1367 [=Leo/Uma], 2079 [CrB] and needless to say I'm overwhelmed with galaxies it's amazing that a hour or so at the telescope can take seemingly days to explore, annotated and present the results but it's most exhilarating and rewarding - especially when good folk on the forum like yourself find time to respond - thanks

Here's today's offering eg AGC 1185 with over 30 marked galaxies in mag 14.1-16.7 range on Ursa Major borders with Leo and Leo Minor again via ETX-70

Here's AGC 2065 redone in a hopefully clearer layout with finder chart I've downloaded the Digitized DS survey with extra 40 galaxies on my pic shown with unmarked circles

Maurice,
I think the original layout might be a little more field friendly with black lines and lettering. The addition of the orientation map is a nice touch. You've done wonderful job of processing your observations; so much software so little time ... Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Max, Seeker and Matt - got diverted by the tiny SX CCD cam [see Meade LX200 forum] but catching up - here's another Abell Galaxy Cluster eg AGC 1213 on UMa/Leo borders with very faint galaxies in the range mag 14.4-17.0 [via Megastar] and fainter via Palomar DSS eg > 40 galaxies in the frame

Finally from this May 1/2 sequence here's AGC 2073+2079 with brightish stars beta Corona Borealis in the top of the field - the galaxies are all extemely faint [mag 15-17] eg fainter than the galaxies in nearby 'classic' AGC 2065 at 1.5 BLYs. The captured photons from AGC 2073 galaxies began their journey when earth was only 2/3rds its current age

You never cease to amaze nytecam. Great work capturing those distant smudges. Like others, I continue to be amazed that you can do this from London.
