I just 'found' a website with library of starry night short vids @ space.com. I'm (new to &) running ubuntu gutsy and firefox2.0.0.14. I've got their flashplayer formats to run perfectly but some of their older stuff looks like windows media player &/or quicktime formatting. In the win mp mode an add video plays with no sound ... then nothing. In QT mode I get nothing. BTW, I do have the gstreamer codec files all installed except for Dirac vid streams. I looked in firefox add-on list but didnt see what I needed. At this point I assume that I'm missing some form of add-on or plugin files/formats. Noob to linux/ubuntu/firefox, so any help would be appreciated... steve

Have you tried some of the other applications such as Kaffeine or VLC? I can get WMP, although I haven't tried anything in quicktime.

Hi Dave It looks to me like these links open directly - I dont get an option to 'open with...' when I right click. I've set VLC grabs all my secondary files that Firefox wont open directly and that seems to work fine too. When I hit these pages, a second http page opens and the files start to load like std flashplayer stuff...only these dont load. In small box to left there is little dropdown menu that offers WMP or QT format... but then things happen as I described. I was hoping, as a noob to open-source, I'd just missed a setting tab or library that are readily available. ... BTW...My experience with this so far is it is a confusing (but challenging and 'fun') learning curve - and an opportunity to remove myself from the microsoft box. I've peeked at some of your posts here and it looks like you're much farther along the curve than I . I got sent down this path by fellow CNer, slick_rick - yes another obsession to add to my astronomy obsession... Steve

Hi Steve,
I run Mepis but version 6.5 was based upon the Ubuntu distro. [7.0 is based directly upon Debian] I was able to run both quicktime (.mov) video+audio and windows (.wma) audio in Kaffeine. Mplayer would also run (.mov) files. Of course you can download the RealPlayer to watch that format.
I did recently install Ubuntu 7.10, but haven't tested all the media players yet. I know Gnome has a different stable of software by default, but most KDE apps should be runnable in Ubuntu with the right downloads.
A very useful extension to Firefox is the "MediaPlayerConnectivity" addon. It searches your computer, finds all the media players it can, sets things up, then makes them available to you if you want to change associations through a preferences screen. I didn't like messing with the Firefox "Download Actions" panel. The only thing to get used to is: when you click on a media link a small browser window pops up with links (options) for running the media. You just click one of the links and off it goes. You might be able to bypass this window via the settings - I'm lazy, it works..
Yeah, take the change-over to Linux one bite at a time. It is a learning experience after working on another OS for a decade or more. Funny, I began to actually trust my computer, feel more secure in web-surfing, and enjoyed the control that Linux gave me. Got it set up to look and act the way I wanted, and at that point I was ready to switch over. It can become a hobby.
