In the days of film planetary photography it was an advanced teshnique to print multiple negatives on the same piece of photographic paper in order to diminish grain and get a better picture. As a matter of fact this is very tricky to be done in a classical darkroom and perhaps out of the question for color photographs.
But I had an idea why don't try to combine the old with the new world?
So I took four photos of Jupiter on the same negative then I scanned the print, cropped each image and stacked them with registax. The seeing wasn't good but I was curious to experiment.
Vixen 80mm f/11.4 refractor at f/90, T-Max 100 rated at 64ASA developed in Rodinal. 4 second exposures. At lower right you can see the final result in a slightly bigger scale. Grain has gone.
Why bother with this when a webcam is far more convenient and gives better results? Because it's fun, and amateur astronomy has to be fun!
