IC 4665, the Summer Beehive.
IC 4665 is a large sparse open cluster at about 1 ½° northeast of the bright star Beta Ophiuchi. The cluster is so large that neither Charles Messier nor William Herschel recognized it as a deep sky object. The cluster never gained much fame at all. As a result, few observers pay attention to IC 4665. With a diameter of 70’, it is definitely a nice binocular target. IC 4665 is an easy to find object as well : just point your binoculars to Beta Ophiuchi and look to the northeast. With the 8x56 I could count 15 stars of 7th magnitude and fainter. Some observers even reported that the Summer Beehive can be seen with the naked eye under very dark skies!
Site : Butgenbach, Belgium Date : May 6, 2008 Time : around 00,30UT Binoculars : Bresser 8x56 FOV: 5.9° Filter : none Mount : Trico Machine Sky Window Seeing : 2,5/5 Transp. : 4/5 Nelm : 6.0 Sketch Orientation : N up, W right. Digital sketch made with Photo Paint, based on a raw pencil sketch.

Nice Rony. I was wondering how long it would be before you tackled it. It is such a nice binocular area. Roland

Rony,
Beautiful, I am embarassed to confess that I have never looked at IC 4665. I will look tonight if it remains clear. Excellent sketch.

Rony,
Got out on a clear night yesterday and had a look at IC 4665. I could see it with a little 64 mm Newtonian widefield scope and it was impressive. Your great drawing is much better than my live view from poor suburban skies.

Rony,
It's homemade and the smallest of my scopes. I don't gain much from binoculars because of poor vision in one eye. It will eventually be a finderscope on a 406 mm Newtonian. I am fine grinding that mirror currently. I hope to finish it in 2009 (I work slowly). I became addicted to telescope making in the 1960s.

Frank,
I have great respect for people who have the skills and courage to build scopes themselves.
That little newton must be handy to use.

If we would ever get together at the site in Butgenbach, that would be a great star-party.

Nice sketch! That is one of my favorite clusters for sure. The first time my wife saw it, she said it looked like a martini glass (on its side, stem to the right in your sketch). Now I can't help wondering where the vermouth is every time I see it...
Clear skies.

Thank you, Steve.
I'll think at the martini next time I see the cluster. No martini, no party!

Rony,
A beautiful observation of the Summer Beehive (IC 4665). This open cluster in Ophiuchus is spectacular! It must have been a treat through your 8 x 56 binoculars. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
I am sorry that I haven been able to contribute to the forum lately but my work schedule has been very hectic.
Carlos

Excellent sketch, as are your others. Very nice work. Are there any good resources on the web that you would recommend to someone that would like to improve their sketching techniques?
