Anyone get a look at this, and are there any NGC objects (or M objects) nearby for me to slew to to see this nebula(I don't think Barnard objects are in my classic library)whenever it becomes viewable?

Making plans are you? This object, like most dark nebulae likes a transparent sky. It's actually located a little north of half way between the small unexciting globular cluster NGC 6325 and the small but reasonably bright PN NGC 6369.

Use low power to locate the area. DNs repond well to putting a bit of FOV around them. B72 will be at a nice altitude around 0200hrs at this time of year.

Last new Moon, I was able to make out the southern, thicker section with my little ED 80.

Bill

Yes, FOV is a must with these objects. My 10" dob at the Grand Canyon Star Party last year did very well on the DN. They have become some of my favorite objects. A 35 Panoptic was perfect. This are very cool objects to find. Good luck!

Astronomy magazine June or May, 2008 article about dark nebulas....good information!

I want to see snake and pipe nebula but need dark sky! Maybe I able to spot it when the night is right without moon near Dixon in Illinois. Yellow and Green light pollution zones!

I've observed it twice that I remember. One was in Bill Cone's 18" at 8200ft on Mount Lassen. See B72 in:

http://observers.org/reports/2007.7.18.1.shtml

I also observed it near Mount Lassen in 2005, but only make a passing comment about seeing it:

http://observers.org/reports/2005.07.06.6.html

I'll put this on my list for GSSP, which has darker skies than the prior locations.

Clear skies,
