I'm getting pretty excited. Weather is looking good so far. We will be hitting the road Thursday 5AM coming in from Seattle.

All my astro stuff is sitting here in my office since returning from TMSP - packing should be easy this time, other than all camping stuff reaching to the ceiling of the mini-van

I am getting pretty charged up. Chuck Dethloff just told me my 16 inch f/4 will be ready for OSP, so now I will have dark sky *and* a big jump in aperture to use. Today my wife and I do most of our packing, and then jump on the plane Tuesday night for a flight into Redmond. Hope to see many of the CN crew starting Wednesday. I will be the guy without a lot of hair, and with a grin permanently stretched over my face!

John, Shhh... yes;-)
He built my 8 inch FFT (frequent flyer telescope) back in '97, which is very jealous of its younger, bigger brother.
It has a Swayze 16 inch f/4 in it.

I figured you for better taste in music! But I will be taking the harps camping at Takhlakh Lk., near Mt. Adams, during OSP. (With #1 daughter & grandson plus, for the bonus round, #2 daughter & wife will join us for the weekend.) I hope we run into some people with geetars & mandalas, or whatever the heck those things are.

I really have my fingers crossed for you guys. CLEAR SKIES!

Bring on the clear skies and sleep deprivation.

I was just looking at Starry Nights for the OSP local. Wow - lots less daylight than TMSP - probably about a hour more of darkness due to the being a month later and 3 degrees south in lattitude.

Thursday: set 7:42PM
Friday: rise 6:20AM, set 7:41PM
Saturday: rise 6:21AM, set 7:39PM
Sunday: ris 6:23AM

Orion rising in the morning while it is still dark! M42 at around 20 degrees at 4:15AM

Jupiter events:
On the merdian right around 9:25PM each night.
Great Red Spot on Jupiter's meridian around 9:45PM Thursday, 11:25PM Saturday.
Io shadow transit Friday about 8:45PM to 11:05PM

OSP - Dark site telescope question:

My f9/100ed is my primary scope. I will also have p-mounted 9x63 bins.
Should also bring my f7/80ed?

Advantage:
1) 4.5 degree FOV with Pan35 vs 2.6 FOV with the 100ed
2) attempt whole Veil in one FOV w/narrow band filter

Disadvantage:
1) it is an 80 and I'll have the 100
2) would have to swap rings/clamshell midday - only have single mounting plate for the big mount
3) someone might have to ride on the roof to fit everything in the minivan.

Nice to have choices.

I'd bring one or the other of the refractors, unless you have enough space that it don't matter.

I'm taking a way-round-about route to OSP. I left on Saturday and stopped at Sun Lakes. We (my friend David and I) had beautiful clear dark skies that night but I got into camp late and didn't feel like setting up the scope.

Sunday we took the back roads down to Palouse Falls then on to the Blue Mountains. We camped in the Blues at 5400' among a bunch of cattle who were feeding on the rangeland.

Monday was a long day. We drove down thru the Blues and into Asotin and Lewiston. From there we took Hwy 12 across Idaho, thru Missoula and on to Helena where we met the incredible CSA Montana (Carol). Her Dream Catcher observatory is truly a model for and excellent backyard observatory and her new 16" AstroTech dob is fantastic! She has star party skies every night.

Tonight we're in Idaho Falls. We'll hit Craters of the Moon National Monument and the Bruneau dunes tomorrow. Then hopefully on to at least Boise and hopefully Ontario. Thursday we'll head into OSP from John Day.

See you all on Thursday evening!
