Hi all, on a Finnish forum there was a reminder of NASA urging Lunar meteor watch on January 6th 2007.
Went to browse a bit the Lunar observations threads around that time - and also used the forum search engine - but was yet not able to find anything on this.
So, could you folks please tell if there are reports of any documented, meteorite-verified flashes on the Moon out there - or any videos on the occasion that you are aware of? Any joint observations network or any observing program going on by anybody at the moment?
On the mentioned site, there is NASA experet Bill Cooke reporting of 19 documented impacts by him till that time. Cooke works with the Nasa's Meteoroid Environment Office in Huntsville, Alabama.
On the Finnish forum, there was a question about how to observe and document this kind of meteorite impacts automated. A rcommendation was made to use dedicated camera software that is triggered by the occasion (automatically) and stores the result on hard drive for further analysis.
As an example only, those interested in monitoring various phenomena on the skies (meteors, fireballs, satellites, lightning...) have developed motion capture software to accomplish this. - Don't mind that the U-word is mentioned on the page - I think (and hope) it is mainly for sales promotions... Many other programs must exist which I am not aware of.
Be well all!

Timo,
Here is a NASA reference:
http://www.nasa.gov/centers/marshall/news/lunar/
There is an article in Selenology Today, issue #9 on the subject as well.
Here is a good reference for using the lunarscan program etc. : www.gvarros.com/lunarscan.zip
also the main page at:
http://www.gvarros.com/index.html
Here is a manual with more explanations that Raf Lena put together some time ago:
www.glrgroup.org/lunarimpact/manual.htm
Hope this helps...

Thanks again, Rick! That article of yours with Raffaello Lena on Selenology Today # 9 looks very interesting and most informative! I linked it (and the other links too) to the Finnish forum!
Be well!
